Dude... you waited 24 minutes. Chillaxe.
There's no pause, or beats, for the effect to register. Cause the first coin to vanish. Pause. Cause the second to travel. Pause. Etc. Second, there's no progression in effect. There's no build, and subsequently, no real climax. Usually for the last one people pretend to take the last coin in their hand, causing it to vanish, then letting a spectator turn over the card to reveal the final assembly. I would get Darwin's Designing Miracles for a kick-butt course in the art of structuring and building routines. Finally, there are some cool other aquipments you could use to show cards as "clean" before putting them down (and whatnot) if you chose to go that route- you may decide not to. But, if you haven't yet look into Roth's Expert Coin Technique or John Born's Matrix God's Way (I haven't read it but I've heard good things). Best, Ben

Agreed with Ben on the need to slow down. Let each effect register. Also, you should provide some sort of magic cause to the trick, so that people aren't only registering pick-ups of the cards.
Other thoughts... Progressing-wise, it looks better if you start with the coin travelling from the card behind the leader rather than the one diagonally across. There's more cover on that route, so it's the weaker one, and it seems to suggest that you somehow shot the card across, a suspicion you can dispel on the second phase. Finally, I don't think you get much on the repeat. You're repeating the same basic method, so you're only risking getting caught, and you're not offering anything in the way of new proofs to deal with suspicions that might arise from the first go-round. |

He is using the exact same handling as Bill Malone only without a presentation, I suppose that if Bill would've posted this video here a few years back the feed back would have been different.Gambit did the routine just as well as Bill.
I'm sorry but I disagree with the two comments above you guys were way too critical, but I guess that is tipical from the Café members,we are all experts:). P.S. It is easy and not easy to do magic in from of a webcam. |

They're bringing up valid points that would help this effect, and many others. Pauses would improve it, and the second phase should build on the first while using a different method. Look into Curtis Kam's "Inverted Matrix" on his Silverado DVD. Here's a mediocre performance of the second phase I found on Youtube (it's the only one they had): http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=JOIW7sOzX-4 Also, the laying down of the cards seems too calculated. It's too neat and "thought out" one might say. It's important for this initial covering process to seem nonchalant. The effect isn't bad, but improvement can be made. Best of luck working on it. |

I disagree, LF. If you post a video asking for comments, you can hardly complain that someone is too critical. And of all people on this board, Andrew and Ben will tell it straighter than most. It looked okay to me: technically proficient at any rate. But without a presentation, the repeat seems redundant. Often these "matrixes" will start off repeating the effect but then put a twist on it, like they're all back under their own cards or something. |

Perhaps he went to fast (TEMPO) and with out pauses was do to file size, this happens when recording. we at times try to get every thing in,
However his technique was very good, perhaps some of the posters here can put up a demo to show Gambit how the matrix should look. This will help Gambit welcome to the Café it is a good place to learn and improve, vinny |

For the record, I never claimed to be an expert. The poster wanted to know what I though, so I told him. In fact, rather then extol my own virtues, I recommended him to several "real" experts.

Will you be performing this to tape recorded music and/or doing a silent act?
Or will you be talking? Because unless you're planning on doing a silent close up act to music, then I don't think really valuable critique can be given. Pauses, misdirection, etc are all deeply intwined with what you say and how you say it. But if you want to perform this outside of a silent act to music, then it's not. Of course, if you ARE planning on doing this as a silent act and/or music, then you can disregard what I wrote above. SEY |

Looked nice to me. I would suggest something different for the repeat, such as the vanish of the last coin as Ben suggested, for a climactic finish.

I for one would never trust you.

It means you're half way there.

Hey everyone thanks for all the comments! I appreciate all of the criticism and will work on the routine. And now for a few follow up questions.

Is there anyway around this? Also I agree that the second stage has little to offer and I only included it to increase the duration of the trick. Are there any good alternate climaxes when only 4 coins are used? I like Ben's idea of vanishing a coin in the hands for the last phase, but I feel rather uncomfortable of pretending to pick up a coin from underneath the card and then vanishing it. In front of a real spectator it would be fine, but I feel like being clever like that wouldn't fly well on camera because if one were to watch the video multiple times they would realize that I never showed the coin I vanished and hence the coin was underneath the leader card the whole time. I think I might rerecord the video with some pauses between transpositions. thanks for all the advice! |

In fairness it's quite difficult to build tempo in to a routine performed in this fashion. i.e: without spectators, who in my experience help to dictate the pace of a routine as you have to allow them to register what has happened. These sort of clips are good really for assessing the quality of the slights and with that in mind I thought it was performed reasonably well.

Thomas thank for sharing. Gambits second phase was not as good as his first phase
However I was commenting on his technique which thought was quite good.It is difficult to judge a routine in shuch a short time span. vinny |

Vinny,
I agree his technique was pretty good. I was just offering him an idea to help in his brainstorm of a second phase. Best, T.J. |
