Okay, here is the truth, Japanese and European performers have mentors that guide and train the students. They help, if not provide custom equipment for them as well. They can get just about anything made for their acts.
The closest thing to what the young lady was doing is known as the L. Ireland 1 to 4 ball production. These instructions were issued with the old Ireland Multiplying Golf Ball set. Ireland's is now Magic Inc. out of Chicago, contact them and see if the method is in one of L. Ireland's booklets they sell. Your best bet is to call them as they do not answer Emails, anyway, they never would answer my Emails. Next to the closest thing of the Ireland Golf Balls is the yellow set sold by Loftus Co. They are a wholesale only company, so you have to find a dealer that sells them. Then buy 2 sets. Then practice, practice, practice. As far as what she was doing, it is not in print or video anywhere. You just have to live with that reality. I believe her sets were custom made hinged and double shells that only a master craftsman can make. In Japan they have hollow wood balls and this is what I think she was using. There is an old hinged set called the nesto balls, but that is not what she was using. She did the 1 to 4 six times in that little video. One method may have been different then all the others. The above suggestions gave you good references as alternatives, Shimada's personal video that he sales personally very good. |

Whatever she used, she certainly did it well. I agree, it looks like a custom made setup. Being able to take them away, one-at-time, is amazing and kills the notion of the old hinged set ala multiplying candles.
I bet she PRACTICES MANY MANY HOURS A DAY.

I agree with you, Pete. Her performance shows her hard work and dedication paid off for her.

This young ladies performance was very good in aspects of staging, theme, etc. There was only 2 mistakes that made her performance fall short, and that was the ball split, where she exposed the ball in the left hand, and the obvious (to me anyway) repeated placement of the shell from the bowl. If she could fix these 2 points, she would have a perfect act for this segment.
The ease at which she produced the balls tells me it is a gimmicked arrangement, there is nothing wrong with using gimmicks, as the acts that I have seen in the past, shows that making it as easy as possible on the performer usually succeeds to a successful care in magic. Professionals use equipment that will work 100% of the time. It is the effect to the audience that counts, not whether it is done with or without a gimmick. |

I agree with you totally, Bill. It is the effect to the audience that counts.

Mark Wilson's big book has a great routine, if I'm not mistaken.
Today I did a gig for hundreds of disadvantaged kids for HealthNet and did a 4 ball production with 4 different colored balls, no shell. It was really fun to do. The kids loved the colors and all the balls coming out of their ears.

As great as it is to hear of magicians doing a for ball routine, this string commenting on the video performance listed in the initial post.
This string should really be named 'Flash 4 Ball Production' where one ball is shown and suddenly the performer has 4 balls between his/her fingers. This is the most magical production in Billiard Ball Magic, it looks like real magic. Just thought of another method that was issued with the Fakini Finale Climax Ball set. It was Karroll Fox's method, I believe this was mentioned in one of his hard bound books as well. His books are of course out of print. Someone should publish his books in one volume with reduced text as it was poorly published by Supreme Magic years back. |
