I just received the above book for my birthday, which I asked for, I thought I would bring to your attention as I think it truly a book to inspire a working performer/illusionist.
The book is called "Cirque de Soleil - 25 Ans de Costumes" Soft bound 152 pages (Les Editions La Presse) It is in French, but is mainly an illustrated book. It covers 25 years of Cirque shows' and their costumes in 152 pages (including Chris's "Beleive" ie. 12 designs). Each show is covered in 4-6 pages, with a few photos in between of the Cirques' costume shops. There are MANY full page pictures (every second or third page is a full page solo or ensemble photo). VERY little writing. Just letting my eyes wander over the photos makes you want to think of how an illusion could be redesigned to fit the "look" of that particular costume. They are truly inspiring. It is about $40.00 USD or CDN if you visit the cirquedusoleil.com site boutique/store, it is that price in both the U.S. and CDN store. Your local bookstore may be able to do better, or you may be able to talk your local library into getting a copy. It may be sold at some of the Cirque shows currently on tour. Anyway it is something you may want to look out for if your are developing a new show, or material. This is one of the leaders in live entertainment. It would make a good stocking stuffer! Blair

Ali,
Thanks for mentioning the languages, here in Quebec I did not see it in the stores in English, so I got the French edition. As I said there is very little writing in the book. But I did check my copy to see if it was multilingual just now (ie. in more than one language in the same book) and it wasn't. So I guess you just specify when ordering. B

This looks really like something to get inspired from. All Cirque du Soleil production are marvelous and I love their shows.
It's very interesting to take a show and try to understand the story or plot just from watching it. Thanks for the link Blair. Oliver. |

I had the opportunity to attend a lecture by the purchasing manager of the Cirque costume dept. (the designer could not make it). She showed a documentary on the designer, and then passed around a few of the costumes that the designer had done. She also brought along the HUGE purchase book for each of the costumes detailing where every part of the cotume came from, price, quantity to purchase, a smaple of the part/piece, who was it for etc. etc. An amazing amount of detail for each one.
The Cirque has an open house here now and then, I am probably going to try and catch the next one! Blair

Blair,
My wife would love to attend such a lecture. How is it possible to get an invitation? Bob Sanders Magic By Sander PS --- Being in French is OK with her. |

In Quebec we have cultural circuits ie. folks that do lectures etc. a listing/booklet goes out to the libraries and they select the programs for the season for their branch. I was fortuante that a local library had booked this film/lecture/speaker into a local branch. The events are open to the public at no cost. As an interest, there are also magicians on the circuit, but while I received the application, I prefer to be independant from government funding. But there are tour grants also.
With regards to the Cirque, you must remember their main office, training center and shops are here in Montreal with several thousand employees working there. As they also work closely with the government programs, when the citys' cultural centers have an "open to the public" weekend the Cirque facility is often part of it, with tours. I am sure the films on the costume designers are available to local libraries, as they are documentaries (in style) but you would certainly miss out on the "live' componant. Sorry I could not be more helpful. B
