I suppose, Dick, that you could ask the same question about any mentalist. Has Kreskin gotten mentalists in China more work? Has David Berglas gotten people in Canada more work? Has Max Maven gotten mentalists in England more work?
Sometimes fame is regional. With the Geller phenomenon, it was, at one time, global (well, to countries with television service in the 70's). I think that the television show THE MENTALIST will probably end up getting mentalists more work than Geller does these days. - entity

Uri Geller did as much for mentalism as Derren did and in turn the same as what Angel and Blaine did. The way they have all shared in getting performer more work is by taking the arts and bringing them
to public awareness. So has the show, the Mentalist. Want to compare if the aforementioned people have had significant influence? They are all still currently in the public eye. When one first tells somebody that they perform magic, the lay audienec usually starts asking questions such as "can you do that thing that. David Blaine did?" A lot of performers sees this as a negative thing when it can in actuality be seen as a positive thing, because the audience is genuinely asking you such questions because they are genuinely interested in seeing effects performed live and right in front of them. You basically already got their attention which is worth its weight in gold. If you tell somebody that you are a mentalist and then they go "ok, read my mind then" (and nowadays this actually does occur relatively frequently, which is a good thing because you immediately know what they expect from you thus you use it to your advantage). Who or what can we accredit this to? Derren Brown and that show, The Mentalist. |

And I should have mentioned Blaine in my post. He's another example of global fame that would indeed have resulted in popularizing magic (more than mentalism, I think) in the public's eyes, resulting in more work for many performers.

Because he is little known outside of the magic/mentalism community in the US, I doubt that Derren Brown has had any appreciable impact on public awareness that would affect the career of working mentalists in the US one way or the other. I also think that Uri Geller's current impact is also negligible. The under 30 set is too young to remember him and Kreskin is a far more recognizable/familiar name to those over 40. IMO both Geller and Brown have had far greater impact/influence on those of us who perform mentalism than on the general public whose exposure to mentalism is far more apt to be limited to what they see on TV (where Derren Brown is almost never seen in the US and while Kreskin and Geller are both rarely seen these days, Kreskin is seen more often than Geller) than in live performance. Members of the public are likely to see a mentalist in live performance at most once in their lifetime and most will probably never witness one.

He hurt when he was a fraud. Derren hurts because he is a revealer. I was discussing this same fact with a friend the other day, and he asked me "Then why isn't Criss Angel a help to mentalists?" I replied, "Criss Angel is a hurt because he is a creep with no acting skills. " |

I think Criss Angel and David Blaine are BIG help to mentalists. If people are interested in magic, that's already one foot in the door for a mentalist to promote themselves and get a gig.

Geller, though in a different way, is still in the public eye. He is obsessed with being in the public eye, good or bad. He has a syndicated show in countries throughout the world that promotes mentalist entertainment. Many of these countries believe deeply in this kind of thing.
In a phone conversation with him around the time of The Phenomenon Show here in the States, I asked him how he wanted me to refer to him in a particular series of press releases. He said Paranormalist or Mentalist. True, he has adjusted over the years, who hasn't, by that is how he perceived himself. At least at that place in time. His current syndicated TV show (he has several) is called something to the effect "finding the next mentalist." This mentalism show is now in reruns and options have been picked up that will keep new shows being produced. Like it or not, in various ways, he is still a world wide phenomenon. Dick
