Copper-Silver-Brass in all its incarnations. Just enough secret "mechanics" to perfectly compliment the required sleights. Routine can be expanded or shortened to suit any circumstances.

For close-up magic without cards, my favorites would be:
Sponge balls Color changing knives Gypsy Thread Hanging Coins All of these effects, while relatively simple, can have an incredibly strong impact on the audience. I have found that they typically garner much greater reactions than the methods would suggest.

My version/handling of the Edward Victor Bat Trick.
Copper/Sliver in spec's hand. TWEEZERS (see it at http://www.petebiro.com ) OK, blatant plug... but I love doing it.

I cast another vote for the Cups & Balls, as well as the Chop Cup. Coins across also is a favorite.

Cups and balls??? Pah, what a rubbish trick!
I like the balls and cups trick, myself.... Speaking of cups and balls and non-card effects, anyone ever do Eddie Joseph's final load with playing cards where they are shook out of the cup? |

One of them is David Roth's Purse and Glass. I do not perform it, but I sure admire it.

I have an Okito Box routine that uses a Boston box, a small box and a mag/card that's pretty neat. After that, 2 copper 1 silver with a 1949 coin and Coin thru Coin.

Lots of good choices listed on this thread. Hard to make a single choice.
However, since you asked for a person's favorite trick, and even though it was a hard choice to make, I think that I'd have to list a Professor's Nightmare/Cut and Restored Rope type of effect, namely--particularly Richard Sanders' "Fiber Optic--Extended". Done correctly, this is eye-popping magic. It's one of the few effects that cause me to have an internal dialog with myself: "WOW! If there is such a thing as real magic, this would be it." This is hard hitting visual magic at its finest. Seeing effects such as Fiber Optics--Extended never fails to remind this jaded observer why he got into magic in the first place.
Magic is a vanishing Art.
This must not be Kansas anymore, Toto. Eschew obfuscation. |
