Guessing red/black was a very popular parlour test of ESP in Victorian England.
The Jermay routine builds in 3 phases that add drama, and, as Mr Cassidy pointed out, set in motion a train of logical disconnects. The method is ingenuious and requires some skills, and the whole pack in used. In fact being able to do this in an entertaining way for the whole pack is genius in itself. With the proper historical background and framing this routine (and I mean routine, not simply the sorting of cards) is a wonderful piece. Does not even the title itself evoke a Victorian Parapsychological experiment?
