For folks that don't know the effect, 4 face up jokers magically turn face down, one at a time. That's a good effect right there. For the grand finale, the 4 jokers turn face up and are now the 4 aces. Club, heart, spade and diamond. No false count showing the same ace twice. It is the 4 aces.
This little miracle costs about $14.00 at your favorite magic shop. If you've never performed it, you are missing out. Most shops carry it, so RUN and get it! NFW was released in the late 1990's and created quite a buzz. Word spread quickly, because of the internet. I think Magic Smith ( Chris Smith ) had made a demo and put it on the site and I watched it over and over, thinking trick photography was being used. Oz Pearlman does it so smoothly here: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=4sOJBkezLyo&feature=related I don't have the chops to do the 4 face up joker count as Oz does it. Even so, not once in all these years has anyone mentioned it. I think it's good to use the 4 aces to go into another effect. Matrix would be good. Brave souls can push the envelope a bit and do Doc Daley's Last trick ( now at least two of the cards are in their hands ). Anyone else do an effect right after performing NFW? Thanks to Gary Freed ( he gives credits for his inspiration ) for releasing this "Magic Monster" of an effect.

I seem to recall that I had this effect a long time ago, but got rid of it. It is truly stunning to see it on You Tube, but if I recall, it is one of those effects that FORCES your spectators to want to take a look at the cards. I know about audience management, but some effects just rub a spectator's nose in it. Isn't this one of them?

The reason I think a follow up effect is important with NFW is because the change is so shocking, that they'll want to see the cards. 3 of them they can, one they can't. So, going right into a Matrix is a good idea.
Doc Daley's trick gets two of the cards in their hands, so that could work. There are other ways to get away from handing them out and I think that's worth exploring because the effect is one of the best gaff packet tricks on the market. If magic is a hobby and you aren't going to do a follow up effect, you can do something as simple as having another 4 aces in your pocket and when you complete NFW, place them into your pocket. If they ask to see the cards, take out the extra 4 aces. Whatever you decide, it's worth the extra effort because this effect kills.

This is the packet trick I carry with me all the time. For the last phase sometimes I toss the cards into the specs hand and then take them back ,spread them one more time then put them away.
I don't give them enough time to check the cards out of course. |

GREAT effect. We used to demo this one often and it sold well. I may have to start demoing it again now that I am thinking of it again.
Certainly an effect to have in your arsenal.

I would think in a shop, if this was demoed, they'd buy it.

I have workes with this a lot and I have found out that the reason they want to look is they can believe, but if you give one of the jokers out ( which you don't even have to) and say that "they can look but its not important" they will look at it but the wording you used will make them stop at one and not look for the others. If they want the others you can take the others out of your pocket and give them all , too. What you have done is,you have given one of the jokers and put the others in the pocket as they are inspecting the one. and if they ask you bring 3 and give them away. Also showing all the cards clearly will generally kill the wanting of inspecting (bad sentecne there). To all, So to sum up, this is very strong. If you are giving yourself an excuse to not perform this, you are doing yourself very bad. actually, a cliche but, do not perform this so that I can be the only one... |

Wow. I haven't heard this in a while. NFW was actually one of the FIRST tricks I ever bought at a magic convention that my parents and I went to about ten years ago. My dad and I saw it and flipped out. It forced me to learn the Elmsley Count. I spent the entire remainder of the convention staring at my hands practicing the Elmsley Count while Dan Garrett, Pavel, and a few other well knowns were on stage performing cutting edge stuff. My eyes were glued on my "4" cards. Thanks to that trick I now am a successful close up magician...thanks NFW.

I'm not sure I remember that convention, but I do remember seeing you at there in the audience practicing your Elmsley Count.

A dvd that came out a couple of years ago has an non gimmick version of NFW, I think it was overlooked by many because of the title and language in the DVD. I personally loved the DVD the NFW and Spellbound I use all the time. And it had an amazing interview with James Dimmare.
Here is a video link were the NFW is shown, The clean up that is taught on the DVD is easy for an average card worker. I don't think ( don't remember ) the original trailer showed much of the effects on the DVD itself, but this one shows part of the spellbound and the whole NFW routine. The DVD got great reviews from Visions and a few other places, but as I said I think the title and language made it a sleeper or flop LOL http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=uR-MPmCtAkc |

Im not sure it is a recommendation, it is for the non gimmicked NFW, the DVD isn't for everyone, it is very rated R. Im being a New Yorker, not really a problem on my end.
