Jonathan gave a lecture to our local chapter of the IBM (Ring 325-Branson, MO) last Saturday evening, and he did a great job! I wasn't familiar with all that he has been through, but his lecture was powerful. He really thinks through a routine and builds it--step by step--with a focus on entertainment and theater. So, in spite of the difficulties, he did a great job last Saturday.

I just saw him last night in Chicago - his passion for magic as an art is upfront - and if you don't realize that by listening to him, then you are not alive.
What saddened me the pain and tourment that he is living with. He did give us a glimps into his personal world and even was willing to share in a one on one session. this is a person who has lost joy. Both he (and his wife) could use our prayers. (for those that don't believe, trust me - it won't hurt and it will cost you nothing!) It would be ashamed if the magic world lost this particular "thinker" |

Jonathan is a great guy. I've met him so many times, but I doubt if he'll remember me. It seems where ever I go, there he is. When I was a student at Pierce College in the San Fernando Valley, he gave a lecture. He was Jonathan Yarbrough then. We first talked afterwards. I always saw him at the Castle. We talked again at the Castle library when he was looking for his mail.
Then I saw him at the televised Houdini special. I didn't get a chance to converse with him then, but I found out what happened to the failed costume change with the Metamorphosis. A stage hand moved the trunk and Char's costume moved. And like I said, we ran into each other in Vegas at the Sporting House. We talked about Walter Gibson and the history of magic until we were interrupted by Charlotte. I haven't seen much from him since they tore it down. Now I read a year ago about how he hit Charlotte. I just don't understand. The man I know is a good guy, but people do anything when they get this low. I'm this low and my creativity has ceased. I'm glad that Jonathan still has his passion for magic even though his passion for life is gone. |

Me too. I have many projects written, but no buyers. Funny... the only ones interested in my books are those that want "me" to pay them to get it published. If I had the money I would.

I know what ya mean. I, myself have become homeless, and darn near broke. I WAS on the street. But am staying at different places, now. I'm not the only one. At least I don't have a family, wife or kids. I can't IMAGINE what that would be like.
Keep the faith, bro'! |

Here is a youtube pictorial of Char that was posted earlier this year by Randy Lessley. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=M7eaz8Sq-xs&feature=related
On the comments, Charlotte herself responds. |

She wrote in there how her thank her friend Randy who took the pictures. And there was a response back from someone who was honored that she responded.

Ahhh.. yeah.. I assumed that you meant something else other than a reference to the tribute video by her new beau.
Other than selling off the props, and causing some controversy in this area because of her alleged business dealings, what is she doing for magic these days? She announced going solo last year, made a few appearances that received a luke warm reception and has dropped off of the radar. |

I couldn't believe it, so I did some digging. I won't repeat it here, but I am so disappointed, and can't find anything that argues against it. Sometimes life can hit people SO hard, that it makes them do things that seem "untowards". I know. I am at that point. It can make you bitter and not care about the consequences. I didn't lose as much as the Pendragons did. I cannot imagine that, plus the loss of each other! We can only pray for them. Mental illness can strike ANY of us, at ANY time. I know. I came close to suicide recently, myself, until a miracle happened. I was at the top of a 26 story building, one or two seconds to free fall, when that miracle happened. So I understand Jonathan's situation. He is recovering and so am I. I don't know if I could have handled HIS loss. God bless them both! Doug |

Charlotte going solo is difficult to imagine as a big success, especially as her established sexy athletic illusionist character. No doubt at her peak, onstage she was hot. Unfair as it is, and beautiful as she is, even if she had an abundance of material, without a change of character I don't see it. With all due respect, her former stage persona has reached an expiration date. As to her reported business dealings, possible in her mind she felt deperate times require desperate measures. Sad, sad, sad. Perhaps the new youtube man in her life can take care of her.

Copperfield has changed with his age, his stage persona has matured. He is no longer flirting with young girl spectators and having them feel his butt like he used to do, nor is he doing sexy dances with pretty girls onstage. he has aged and his act has changed appropriately. The same girls who would laugh at a young Copperfield flirting and going on about sex would wince and say "Ugh that old jerk is so gross" if he didn't mature his character with age. Likewise, a mostly silent boxjumper in revealing sexy attire doesn't have the same audience appeal in her fifties. What I said is that persona for Charlotte has reached an expiration and I feel for her to continue she should do a little age appropriate updating like Copperfcield has done. Get it?

Good points, cairo...
I am sending some good thoughts her way, and Jonathan's for that matter. They had an unfortunate turn of events, but I remember how great they were and what good they did for magic. Dodd's interviews with Jonathan are exceptional, and provide a real window into it all. A classic love story with a hollywood ending. Probably be a movie some day... Jim

I remember them at the Castle one time. They were't performing. An illusionist couple did a Sub Trunk...not bad, but definitely not outstanding. Later, I wandered into the room and there was Jonathan, onstage, with the couple, going over points on how to improve their effect. Solid points from the Master of the fast Sub Trunk.
I've always had a great deal of respect for both of them, and that night upped the respect quite a bit. Our greatest strengths often can become our greatest weaknesses, and vice versa, whether it's Love or Business, or Talent or whatever. I pray both come to terms with their strengths and weaknesses. We all got 'em, we just seldom get them splashed over the newspapers. Healing to them both.
We dance an invisible dance to music they cannot hear.

That's how Jonathan was. He really cared about the art of magic and didn't mind sharing what he knew with others. I hope he hasn't lost that fire completely. I've been fortunate enough to have had a number of long conversations with Jonathan in the past few months, and can reassure you that he hasn't lost that fire at all. And from the reviews I've read of his lecture tour, I suspect the attendees would agree with me. |

The thoughts and kindness expressed here give me strength and, yes, even someone who has survived what I have (mauled by tiger, severe tinnitus and an arrow through the heart) benefits from the hopes and prayers of others. Thank you.
The people I met during my lecture tour were wonderfully supportive and seemed inspired by what I had to say about magic. Magic will always be my life and the experience that comes with age only renews my desire to explore more possibilities within my art. I intend to lecture more and develop material that will be avaliable to the community. I discussed my new style, Metaphysics, during the lecture. While not going into detail, I expanded on many of the ideas related during my interview in MAGIC and to greater degree on Dodd's Magic Newswire podcast (Thank You Stan and Dodd). I will be presenting Metaphysics in the Pellar theater (one show only) on Oct. 4th at the Magic Castle. Richard has been gracious enough to feature me in an upcoming Genii issue. Jim Steinmeyer is woriking with me on the articles and interview. I promise an issue that will enlighten. Jonathan Pendragon |
