So, here's my problem.

My presentation skills are there. My technical skills are there. BUT, all my tricks run about 3 minutes or about 5 minutes. I tend to have too many tricks in one show to give any of them a true showcase.

I have begun to build some longer routines, but mainly by starting from scratch with new, very creative materail.

I would like to get more out of some of my existing material, and will begin by using clustering/mind mapping on existing effects to expand them.

Are there any other techniques available to apply to creating new material systematically?

The fact that you are asking the right questions shows that you are on the way to learning the correct answers for yourself. Keep it up!

I have the same problem. For me, writing out my own script for the effect I am doing helps.
Didn't your mother ever tell you not to believe anything you hear and only half of what you see?
