You're still new, so don't worry about any sort of specialisation yet. You'll find it when it's time. I'm one of the people who likes not to specialise. It makes things a lot easier. Imagine being a card magician stuck at a 4 year old's birthday party...

The best magic is the magic that you will perform. So you need to find what you are most comfortable doing, else you'll lose interest. As you are new you need to experiment a little to find some areas you like. Then when you find one or two genre's you like, start going deeper in those. If you still enjoy that, then consider going deeper, or decide to specialize in a few areas.

My $0.02:
Find out what you like when you see magic (cards, coins, mentalism) and also find out what it is you want to accomplish with the audience (shock and awe?, Entertainment?, Visually stunning WTF moments?). Then start practicing the tricks you like and think about the best way to make them your own. After you understand the concepts of the trick, do it your way. I believe different kinds of tricks can be mixed and matched but you will need to smooth them out and string them together so they do fit together. You can't act like a hustling card cheat one minute and then a mysterious mind reader the next. You can do both of those kinds of tricks in one performance but you need to find a way to smooth them out and make them your own. Hope that helps!
Well, That was fun!

It's so easy to overwhelm yourself with books and dvds and all that stuff.
My add on points are: Make an intentional effort to make practice fun with some expected hard work but not drive your head into a wall kind of practice sessions and then burn out and get discouraged. Pace yourself because what you think you learned well be re-learned again a month, a year or more later from now - Really! DO NOT listen to the magic snobs on this forum. You'll know soon enough who those people are by how they just talk (write) crap out of their arse. Ignorantly arrogant. Make magic an experience for others if you should perform for others - you'll know what that means later on - not expected now. And if possible, go to lectures and ask others for help and mentoring - you can't really do this alone ,well I guess you could but will take you longer to learn instead of absorbing the wisdom and insight of the experience of others. And final thing - some things will just happen overnight. Say you been practicing a sleight for 3 months - not looking good and not feeling right then all of a sudden for whatever reason - Bam, the execution works and you get it - it happens and I know for sure that almost everyone can attest to this. It's like a magic epiphany. ok one more thing, sorry always be ok to walk away from one genre and re-visit it later, Magic is funny in that it works on layers of many concepts and skills and also contingent on other skillsets. I'm outta here. Per |

I mix it all. Card,rope,balls,silks Ellis ring.cups,chop cup,coins,thimbles,blah,blah,blah.
There is so much out there that's fun.I don't and doubt I ever will concentrate on just one aspect. One thing for sure. You will NEVER learn it all and part of the fun is finding the things you want to try. |

Watch a lot of magic. Read a mountain of magic books. Devour every performance you can get your eyes on. Explore different performers and their styles. Only after sampling every offering can you know which are your favorites.
