Ethics vs Being Rich
Duh. I can see it now, big mansion, 3 blonde girlfriends, couple of luxury cars - and my own nightclub. Am I a prostitute? No more so than those "actors / actresses / ARTISTS" who take off their clothes for money. I think that's a "yes".

The question that got me thinking is "would you give discuss other people's unpublished works kept in trust for that ten million". That's where I had to step back and it occurred to call the folks in question and get permi$$ion and then go from there about where permission not given.

On the prostitution question, which is always interesting (what's your price?), I would say this:
10 million is enough for me to to anything other than murder. I would (honestly) not murder anyone or abuse one or molest one or otherwise cause emotional or physical harm to anyone for any amount of money. Period. Everything else is for sale. And 10,000,000 would basically cover anything I can think of. Including magical secrets. Now, I wouldn't sell secrets for $100, or $1,000, or.... I don't know what my "magical" limit is. But I'd mow Jonathan Townsend's lawn for less than $100, provided he'd buy the plane ticket to his place and back. And I wouldn't mind a few tips and hints about what he knows. And I'd certainly share with him everything I know. And and and and. What was the question? |

What if selling those magical secrets for 10 million caused the creators and performers of those effects emotional and/or financial harm?
So you get the $10 mil. The federal government takes about 65% of it. The State probably takes another 30% of what's left. You're still pretty rich, though. But now, every person you've ever known comes calling, asking for a handout. Relatives you can't stand demand their share. You've got to buy extra security so your kids don't get kidnapped for ransom. The tabloids and paparazzi are watching your every move. Anyone you've ever wronged in any way wants to sue you. God forbid you might have some dirty laundry somewhere in your past, because that's now all over the Web, TV and newspapers. Because of the scandal and hassle, your wife divorces you, and of course, she gets half or better of whatever you might have left. Your kids hate you. You've started abusing drugs, and you have AIDS from those three blond girlfriends, one of whom got drunk and crashed one of your luxury cars and the insurance won't pay for it. Sadly, two people were killed in the accident. How's that decision looking right about now? A very wise person once said, "Before you begin to build a tower, stop and count the cost...." I'd rather have a clear conscience, a good marriage, a good reputation, and peace and privacy than monetary wealth, mansions, luxury cars, and bimbos who are only after my money any day!

The fact is that people will act how they act no matter what the prize. It would take far less for many to reveal "secrets".(the whole concept is laughable anyhow that magic actually still has "secrets".)
The amount of money does not dictate peoples ethics or morals. It confuses people to find this out, but it is true. That hooker joke makes a point. Read it a few times you will find it I am sure.

Everyone has a price. It may not be dollars but we all have a price,a comfort level, a moral level and on and on.Its nice to want to believe that none of us would ever.....do whatever for money. The truth is so many people have sold their souls for so little. One never knows until they are thrust into a situation or find themseles on unfamiliar ground. Scott Guinn makes a strong case though and Im more in line with his thought, I think. Did you say 10 million?

I am constantly amazed by what high regard magicians seem to want to hold "secrets" in. As much as it is hard to admit, I have done much worse things for much less money, sometimes not even money just stupid. I have done things to people who at the time were trying to be friends. Horrible. No two ways about it horrible. I have changed my ways and now appeal to the better demons of my soul, but I am pretty sure I am not alone. Heck revealing a magic secret for 10 mil would not even blip the radar.

Certainly I would.
I'd then take the 10 million and use part of it to open a magic theatre where I'd perform all the effects I revealed the workings of and put this whole silly "exposure is the death of magic" debate to rest for once and for all.

"Would you reveal/expose Magic secrets ON TV for TEN MILLION DOLLARS in CASH?"
Sure, but the problem is that you can't reveal magic secrets on TV. You can reveal methods, but those aren't the real secrets in magic. |

Exactly.
I don't know that I would put myself in the "exposure is the death of magic" camp. I just think creators deserve their due. Someone else goes to all the time, expense, and physical and intellectual effort to create something, and then some goof in a mask exposes it on TV and gets paid for it. It's not so much that "a secret" has been exposed, as that someone else's creation was exposed without permission. Imagine you have spent YEARS researching, experimenting, failing, and trying again to solve a magical problem. Then you spent a small fortune to produce, manufacture and market it. It's only been on the market a month or two--you're still well in the red financially; haven't even BEGUN to make a chink in getting your debt paid off yet, much less started making a profit. And then somebody else who did nothing beyond ordering your item at an online discount shop demonstartes it and then exposes it on national TV. And he gets paid more for that half hour than you'll ever make from the sales of your creation. That's just wrong in my opinion.

YES, it WOULD be WRONG.
To play devil's advocate, however, the question was: "Would you reveal/expose Magic secrets ON TV for TEN MILLION DOLLARS in CASH? Be honest..."
