Hi friends:
Recently I watch a dvd by a very influent and excellent magician who recommend to " restaurant magicians" to tip the Waiters of the table when you receive a Good tip from the group. I know the polemic that tips themes provoque here, but I want to know how many of you do this? Share your tip with the waiter of the table that you are working on, or even your opinion on that. My best, Hansel!

And they did what to deserve it???
I had a server say to me the other day,"hey you owe me that table tipped you $10 and they gave me $8." I also had several other servers around me. I said " Maybe they liked me better ; ) .... how do you know they tipped me that?" "I saw it" She said. "Really ... well I never look at tips I just look people in the eyes and say thank you, and then stick into my pocket. ..... So if I give you a dollar are we friends again??" "No ... I was kidding you deserve it." BTW way the other servers were aghast that she would even bring up the subject. I make my money .... they make theirs .... and neither needs to know the others business, whether I am paid to be there or not. " Then

I agree with Mark. You make your money, they make their money and how each earns it is their choice. If the waitress/waiter is mad that you made more than they did, well, they can make a choice to go and spend the time to learn magic and put forth the effort to find a restaurant that will pay them and they can do it to. At this point, they decided what they are doing and knew, going in, how much they might earn.

Just do what's right. You'll know what that is. Personally, I disagree with Mark and Mark, because what this subject amounts to is "politics" -and service industry politics are among the most nasty, petty and cold-blooded politics that exist.
If your current restaurant environment is such that you'd be better served by tipping out the wait staff, then do it and don't even give it a second thought. However -If you can get away with not tipping them out, certainly don't volunteer it... Most restaurant workers need the staff on their good side much more than the waiters need the magicians on theirs. If you know what I mean... This is definitely a case-by-case subject.

Many years ago, I worked for a place that did a "tip share." EVERYONE (including myself) was required to take all of our tips and they were thrown into a jar and at the end of the night, it was split out evenly.
I HATED THAT $&*#! Up until about 5 years ago, I would take a small % of my tips and give it to the GM to divy up among those who worked that night. But the more I thought about it, the more I had the ideas of the Marks. My thought is if a server got a $50 tip, should I be entitled to any of it? HECK NO! They were tipped for the sevice they provided...as are you. You're tips are your own. If a server complains...then as Mark stated above, maybe they should learn a marketable talent and go out and take a stab at Magic, Balloons Animals, Stripping, etc.

Have you ever seen the musician tip out anyone?? That is were I draw my experience from. My deal is with management. As far as staff I stay out of their way and sometime they stay out of mine..... have you ever noticed where ever you stand at a table THAT is the best place to serve food??

Indeed!
Ages ago, I performed at a family restaurant on the east coast called Friendly's. (http://www.friendlys.com/) I performed there for about 3 years. I will never forget this one guy who was hired on as a dishwasher. This guy was a work a holic. He was always calling in on his days off asking if he could work. Didn't matter what shift. He was there! A real nice guy and was really into magic. I would sometimes walk in the back to reload stuff and would catch him eating the uneaten food off the plates as they came back. Come to find out, this guy was in bad shape. He could barely pay his bills and never had money for food. So he got a job at Friendly's as a dishwasher so he could eat. Very sad... This guy I would occassionally throw a few bucks b/c I knew he needed it more than me! Christopher

Makes sense to me. I'm not saying you're wrong pal, and I'm ever so glad you're in a position where you don't need to tip people out. But other people might not be as blessed as you are, and they might want to consider the possibility that tipping out the help might not be the end of the world. In certain situations it might just be in their best interest to do so. Other people can do whatever the hell they want to do and more power to them! The 1st line of my response was "Just do what's right". Most people know what's right for them, or at least have a feeling as to what it.

Generally, I doubt it.
Never heard of entertainment splitting tips with wait staff. If the doorman helps with the audio gear - Definitely yes.

Personally, I keep all tips. I do, however, bring a 2-lb bag of mixed candy bars, Dove Chocolates, Ghiradelli Squares or...on special occasions...Godiva mixed chocolates for the staff each week. (Bought at reduced rates at my warehouse club.) They place the candies in the drawer at the hostess station and everyone enjoys it.
I also set aside a portion of my tips for token staff Christmas gifts each year. I buy little Santa bags from Oriental Trading and fill them with a Parker pen (wholesale), mixed candies, a Christmas ornament or jingle bell pin and a personal thank you note for their support. Total cost: Around $3.00 per bag and I give out around 12-15 bags to the wait and bar staff at each restaurant. Managers share a large Christmas gift basket. All of this comes from my tips. Giving back in this way, I have never had a complaint about accepting tips and the staff at my restaurants look forward to seeing me walk through the door.

No, I do not tip the waiters. In fact, I've had waiters tip ME before! This makes more sense because we, as entertainers, are enhancing the customers overall dining experience, which in turn may kick the waiters tip up to a higher percentage.
Still, I suppose if the waiter went out of their way to make me look good for a group then a tip might be a very classy thing to do. I have worked with some very good waiters that are very complimentary to me. So, maybe I should pay more attention to this. I like Skip's Christmas gift idea too.

I think it's a bad policy anyway. If people don't tip a waiter, it's usually because the service is bad. Why should a good waiter have to give part of his tips to some idiot who sloshes soup on his customers?

I would occassionally share a big tip with a waiter. Why? Word got around to other waiters...and I was no longer seen as 'competition' for tips. Also, since they knew I would occassionally share tips they were always anxious for me to perform at their tables...they would often build me up to the patron...get them excited about my magic...and sometimes even personally escort me to the table and introduce me to the table! This actually increased my tips as I was seen as "a big deal"...
Here's the real deal on restaurants and wait staff. GET TO KNOW THEM! Become more than just a "weekly aquaintence" with them. Find out their names, if they have kids, if they are in college, what they are studying, etc. Have fun with them when you are at a table and they walk up. When the wait staff is "on your side" your tips will increase! I have been to restaurants where they have a magician and the wait staff doesn't even know the magicians name! This is the magicians fault not the waitstaff! Oh well...I could talk for hours on this topic...but then no one would buy my new DVD on the business of working restaurants. ;-) Cody S. Fisher
