Smoky Mountain Magic (www.smmagic.com) makes a topsy turvy "type" effect called Mospundsow. It uses a single bottle with a squared sleeve as opposed two bottles and two sleeves? It looks like a good prop and I'm curious if anyone uses this in their routine. Your thoughts and comments would be appreciated.

I am. Beautiful and well-made. Mine's an early one with the round tube. I should've waited and got the square tube, since it looks more like the box a bottle would be sold in. You won't regret your purchase.

As the ad says it is an old Abbott's Magic concept, cannot go into the gimmick on the forum as you know. Study the picture and you should see the gimmick is right in front of you.
Abbott's stopped making them because the current offering by Mak Magic is much better for the working performer. To do a Topsy Turvy effect, you would have to find a exact duplicate of the bottle on the site. Abbott's did supply 2 bottles and 2 tubes. The site also says the tube is cardboard, $115.00 for a cardboard tube, now that is a deal I can't pass up! If you are a collector, it is a nice conversation piece when other magicians come over to share you food and drink. Out side of that, do what Abbott's found out and drop the product from your wish list. |

The tube is made to look like cardboard, but it's more of a plastic material. I have one, but haven't come up with a good routine for it. It really is well made, and fun to use though.

If they would make or produce a duplicate bottle for the routine, it would of course be very different opinion. Then you would have complete good trick.

Actually, I think Chance has a real nice interlude (it's less than a minute) here:
http://www.youtube.com/watch?feature=pla......j_-DYnXk It's not Topsy Turvy bottles, but a rather different effect. I don't think we should complain about Mospundsow not being Topsy Turvy bottles any more than we should complain about Topsy Turvy bottles not being Passe Passe Bottle and Glass. I suppose that if you had another bottle and another tube or box, you could do something like Topsy Turvy bottles, but I don't think the bottles would need to match. Thom . |

Then a few of the moves were tell tail as well. I disagree, if I am aloud to on the fact that a second bottle would need to be a duplicate. If not it begs the audience or helping spectator to ask to us the magicians bottle. Then a good funny response would be needed to calm the question. As is, I can see this being a very nice interlude between tricks with the right patter. After all this time, the really should make a 2nd bottle and tube for the regular type of Topsy Turvy Bottle trick. |

Nice effect. Took me two viewings to see the working, but it should fool audiences. I've got Topsy Turvy and Passé Passe, Might be able to do a whole routine if all the bottles matched.

If it's something that really interests you, you can call Dan Wolfe & ask if he would make a second bottle (non-gimmicked). He is a real pleasure to deal with & a nice guy to boot!

Can anybody tell me if the earlier Abbott version (or maybe Thayer) is the granddaddy of the more
familiar Topsy Turvy or a b*st*rd child? Which came first? |

But, I do know that the Abbott version is also described in Norman Hunter's book, "Successful Magic for Amateurs" (later known as, "Successful Conjuring for Amateurs"), first published in 1951. Unless someone can verify whether or not this was something made by Thayer, I will look through my books to see if there is any mention. It does seem like something Thayer might have made, owing to the turned piece that is part of the gimmick. I think Smokey Mountain's version looks great! I would like to get one myself, as I somewhat collect bottle tricks.

The only reason I mentioned Thayer is that smagic.com says, "Dan Wolfe first developed
this comedy bottle trick for his stage show in 1999…only to find that Thayer Magic had STOLEN his idea — decades before he was born." So, the Abbott predecessor of MospundoW had already been published in 1951. Does anybody know if there are any earlier dates for the bottle? Could anybody say when Topsy Turvy came out? |

For clarity, the book I mentioned makes no reference to abbott's, nor anyone else. I used that label for reference, so we could distibguish from the Grant version of Topsy-Turvy Bottles. If Dan made mention of Thayer (which I didn't bother to look for), then it is most likely true. It could very likely have been created before Floyd Thayer turned his first one (assuming of course that he did). As far as I know, the two-bottle version known as Topsy Turvy (later ripped off as Tricky Turvy and some others) was created by U.F. Grant, I'm guessing sometime in the 40's?? Perhaps someone with some old catalogs can pinpoint when it first appeared there.

I should also clear up my statement about Grant's 2-bottle version. Abbott's is also a 2-bottle version but is different than Grant's, which uses two normal bottles.

Michael Baker, you are forgetting that Abbott's made the 2 bottle version as well. They were gold sparkle plastic tubes and green 7UP bottles. I had a set for years back in the early 1970's. They were actually more popular then Grant's or Mak Magic's at the time. The labels Abbott's provided said 7 - 11 on with an orange background. I still have an extra label. I 1st visited Abbott's in 1964, the year I purchased my 1st automobile. Up in the glass case at Abbott's there was a set of Abbott version with the metal bottle and unique gimmick. They were painted brown and not as nice looking as the Smokey Mountain Magic bottle.
I don't know but Percy Abbott was a real inventor and creator of magic tricks. He also had a large number of professional magicians of the time that offered their talents to his business as well. It is hard to say without a time line to set up all these questions, but if Higgenbottom really wanted to know, he should do his own research and find the answer for himself. Maybe Dick Oslund would have some idea, but he was so busy working, he may not have interested in this topic of who or what was 1st. This kind of information does not help make a living or pay the bills in life. Percy Abbott and Recil Bordner have passed away a very long time ago, and as most businesses the stories die with them. There is a book on the life of Percy Abbott that is very interesting to read. Recil Bordner was a partner with Percy Abbott for many years, his son Greg Bordner now runs the Abbott's Company. |

No, sir. I did not forget that... I never knew that.
Thank you for the additional education!
I have one of the Abbott "unique" bottle versions. Mine is painted green.

I see that Uday is putting out a single bottle version also from India but don't know who handles it.
He gives away the workings on a Youtube video.
