Do you live in Hong Kong or just plan a trip there?

Do you speak Chinese?

The reason that I'm asking these questions is the magic stores in HK are not typical B&M shops.

Most of the magic stores in HK are very small and only have very few display items. They are mainly located in small shopping malls and the target audiences are mainly local people.

Visitors may not easily be able to locate these shopping malls.

Wingz - Can I double check that B&M is (brick and mortar)?

I go to HK for work sometimes and it would be great to be able to get
some rare, cool thing from a shop or a custom mfg, that I can only get there.
The trips and the time change is a killer, so a bonus like that would be nice.

You are correct, B&M is brick and mortar. Smile

I'm not living in Hong Kong so may not know the whole scene. May be other Café members in HK can provide more valuable input.

My experience is most of the HK magic shops are very small. The size of the store is probably 100+ sq ft. Usually the only things on display are some beginners magic sets or packages. Some teaching DVDs. Anything else, you have to talk to the shop keeper.

If you are looking for a magic effect package, the price is usually higher than most of the online stores. Unless you want to settle for cheap copy cats / replicates.

Do you speak Chinese? If you don't, commuications will be an issue expecially describing magic effects.

I'll suggest you to check the Andy's magic web site below. They are one of the biggest magic props manufactors in HK/China. I beleive they have a retail shop in Hong Kong.

(Disclaimer: I never brought anything from them yet so I do not know the quality of their props)

I second that. Everything in there is counterfeit that has been locally made to copy the original items. I haven't bought any from them but I've asked my friend who speaks excellent Mandarin to ask the shop if the items are genuine or not. They said everything is mass-produced in China. I know it sounds ambiguous but I believe they are counterfeit.

Buying from eBay is a bit different. We have to be very cautious, especially if they sell the item 40% to 60% less than what is listed in famous online shops such as MJM or Penguin. Most likely these items are also counterfeit. Once in a while, you could find a counterfeit item that is being sold almost as high as the original's price, which is sad.

Magic shops in Taiwan is also small and hidden, pretty hard especially because I don't speak much of Mandarin. Bring a local friend is the best idea.
Magic comes through perception. -HS

Hey!
I have been studying one year in HongKong (2 years ago) and I discovered magic there thanks to a friend.

There is ONE "correct" magic shop in one of the malls in Mongkok but I can't remember the name... Anyway it's in one of the big streets in Mongkok: in the mall: 1st floor, straight, in the end, turn left...

If you really want to find it, add me on facebook (augustin petit) and I will put you in touch with a good hongkong friend who might be able to show this place...! To me, it was the one, there are 2 others but they are really bad!!

Good luck!

I live in Shenzhen, a large city (more people than in Hong Kong) on the mainland that shares a border with Hong Kong. I went to Hong Kong one day about 2 years o ago on a mission to buy some magic. I received information on a couple magic stores via email from two HK magicians in advance.

The first store I went to was in an old multi-story building with many shady looking characters. I went to magic shop on the 4th floor and it was very small and they had some cards, small boxed effects and some DVD's (copies, I think). I didn't buy anything.

The second store I went to was in a modern shopping mall (can't remember the name) and it was a small store aimed primarily for the walk-in crowd. It was better than the first store, but I didn't buy anything there either.

My advice to you is to do some research, but don't get your hopes up unless you find a store through reputable source.

By the way, I am able to get by with English in Hong Kong in the majority of cases. I can speak a bit of Mandarin and almost no Cantonese (Hong Kong Chinese).

It is a fascinating place to shop, so go for it when you are there. Hopefully, you'll find what you are looking for.

Good luck,
Martin
