This routine was put together for the first color broadcast of the Ed Sullivan show. I believe this may have been the same show the Beatles were on.
Also notice the use of Rice silks throughout the routine. Harold Rice certainly understood the use of color in his silks. Guys should watch the Fantasio videos to realize the depth of knowledge and styles of performance that Fantasio is proficient at. He is much more than just candles. BTW, I think it is deplorable that his products have been ripped off by foreign companies. Richard

I loved the act. The only thing I thought of was what a pain to load.
But that's why he was on Ed Sullivan and I wasn't! Loved the dove loads using silks! A color explosion!

I really don't think it is that bad to load. And the really nice thing is you don't need animal permits and such.

That was sweet!!! He sure was a good looking young man. What is the name of the effect where a new silk drops from the bottom of the one he is holding? I don't ever recall seeing that done before. The effect where he ties the two black silks near his neck and produces the two fountain of silks was used by Channing Pollock to produce two doves.

Diminishing Silk Production by Eric Lewis and Harold Rice. Marvin Roy used it for years.

To add, the routine is from the book 'Capers with Colors' and can be purchased from the publisher Rice Silk King Studio (click the banner ad at the top of this section) and the Marvin Roy handle with additions/improvements can be found on his video sold by Stevens Magic.

Had the chance to sit down and talk with Fantasio at the IBM convention. What a wealth of knowledge. The guy is just downright amazing. What a brilliant magical mind he has. What makes it even better is he a great guy. I wished I was his next door neighbor.
Bought his DVDs (along with other stuff) and I highly recommend them. |

Richard: Yes,The candles and canes has been copied, but the quality never has been matched! Jef: You are right, especially the last production, but lets think about Ade Duval! He was my hero!!! tnmagicgator: Diminishing silks was used too by The Hamners in his beautiful bird act and always looks pretty. When watching the Fantasio video, I just keep thinking why didn't he use his beautiful wife more in the production sequence.
With silk production now-a-days, there would have been a lot of confetti falling to the floor. The use of mechanical tables is very unique in this act. |

Hansel, you're right...Fantasio is awesome.....and as nice a guy as anyone would ever want to meet.
Regarding this trick.....Rice's Diminishing Silk Production is, in my opinion, an often overlooked classic of Magic, and often elicits "Ooooooohs" and "Ahhhhhhhhs" from the audience...it's that pretty and mystifying of an effect. Richard Hughes points to Marvin Roy as another magician who also had a lot of commercial success, in part due to performing this silk trick. Marvin Roy, like Fantasio, was also a smash hit on the Ed Sullivan show where he and Carol hit it big with their "Mr. Electric" act. Marv made BIG BUCKS at the time on retainer for GE....but that's another story.....and a good one, at that! Although I don't remember ever seeing him perform it on the Ed Sullivan Show, Marvin also did a "Marvin the Silk Merchant" act.....he put a lot of flourish, beautiful timing and showmanship in his magic performances. Marvin's version of the Diminishing Silk Production was done with a lot of flash........a simple effect done beautifully because of Marvin's showmanship. Today, George Saterial performs this trick as a staple in his act, and George also has a great set of lecture notes that details the types of silks he uses and how to fold them for this trick. George's lecture notes for this trick are great and help add another dimension to the silk folds pioneered by Harold Rice and printed in Rice's Encyclopedia of Silk Magic. |

Marvyn retired the silk merchant act when Mr. Electric was born. He incorporated pieces of it it in the Electric and Jewelry act.
Marvyn told me about 20 years ago that no one does silk magic anymore because they are just too lazy to fold the silks. He was right for the most part. Hard work still equals success and Marv and Carol were living proof. I think George Saterial does one of the nicest version of the diminishing silks. I just cannot move like Marv to sell it the way he does. Richard

Thanks for posting the Marvyn Roy video from the Merv Griffin show. When Ed Sullivan's show went off the air, Hollywood palace, Merv's show and the Mike Douglas show were the best places to catch some of the true legends of magic. I remember Channing Pollock on the Douglas show when Liberace was the co-host. I wish someone like Bill McIlhany would get the rights to those appearances to put together an authorized video of the great acts of the 50's and 60's. International Showtime was another great source of classic magic performances.

I had a nice visit with Marvyn in LA in November. He explained in detail his vanishing floor lamp on a pole that used to be part of the Electric. It did not last long in the act.
Marv is still so full of energy and ideas. If you get the chance to be with him, listen and learn so much. Richard

Roughly, about $2000 to $3000 dollars. One idea that helps in the cost is to use large solid silk and applique the 6' silk. I did this for Gilday on a butterfly silk for the Girl to Rosebush. That would save a bunch of money .

I had the pleasure of meeting Fantasio in Miami last Thursday night while I was in town for the Art Deco Festival. What a thrill to meet one of the magicians who inspired me as a teenager. Such a class act, and he still has a twinkle in his eye when he performs!
