PB Jones:
Your most welcome for the feedback and information in regards to your logo. I can understand about not having enough space to put your name next to the logo image. I would just hope that in every real world situation, that it is included with the image every chance you get. The top hat clip art I would worry about a bit more. I really honestly do not think you need it there at all. Just my opinion. Your art work image works much better by itself and it says magic just as well as the top hat does. The top hat and bunny just look out of place. Because the top hat and bunny are not in the same artistic style as the caricature, it looks wrong. I would simply try it without the top hat and see what happens. You may actually like it more. I think it would not only clean up the logo, but would make it read better for you. Just a thought. Also, as a side note, the only reason magicians need to worry about being cliche is that being cliche means your imagry and the look you're presenting to your clients, looks too similar to every other magicians. You want your image and your logo to stand out and be unique in the market place. Your show and act is different then anyone elses and your logo should convey that message as well. The most cliche image we magicians use in our promotions, is indeed the top hat and rabbit. In most cases we magicians even go as far as using the exact same piece of art on our business cards. You can certainly use a top hat or a rabbit if you must, but I think there are better ways to say magic without having to use it in that manner. Well, these are just my opinions on the subject and I hope they help someone out. I certainly appreciate anyone's opinions or coments on the subject. Thanks!

Thanks Kyle
I am a children’s performer who likes to have fun and is comical in style. That is right! I never even noticed the e & r were smaller scaled down. You remind me that when I first saw the logo, I didn’t like the star overlap either. I liked the rest of the logo so I guess it has just grown on me. I have the original PhotoShop file where it was created so I am going to try & clean it up myself. I actually have a lot of different caricatures of myself that appear on my promotional material. So this logo was designed as something to go along with all those. As an example you can see my kid’s party website where the logo caricature exists side by side. http://www.MagicParty.co.nz The only problem I have with the logo, is that it is not really an economical shape to fit in the yellow pages. It would just take up too much space. So what I did was make another one myself that read 'Andy the Magician'. I have it on one line so it is much longer & fits the standard box on a yellow pages ad. That modified version only appears in the yellow pages. My Yellow Pages Ad

I would like to see a version of my "card fan over half my face" photo converted to line art with my name integrated into the lines.
Here's a rough idea of what I mean by reducing the photo to line art: Click here to view attached image. |

Thanks for the quick reply. I have teken a look at both your ad and web site and I have a few comments and suggestions for you that I think you are going to really like. Well, I am first glad to hear that what I thought your brand message was, based on your logo, matches exactly what your style is. Often times, the logo does not really reflect the performer's style and this sends the wrong message to your target audience. Nice work there. I really enjoyed the website and was happy to see that the art work matched the style of the logo type treatment in your name. It was also pleasant to see how you carried over the brand look by incoporating the star image as bullet points. This is a great way to add consistency. By looking at your logo and your caricature, it really gave me one "****" (pardon the French) of an idea for a new refined master logo for you. These ideas just came pouring into my head and I have drawn a few down so I would not forget them. Here is what I would suggest for you as a clean up or refinement to the logo you now have. Make the e and the r larger in comparison to the rest of the copy. Tilt the letters so it does not look as if they are lopping downward towards the end of the name. Move the star and tilt it so that the bottom tip of the star falls in the space between the e and the r Now for the killer part that would really add punch to your new logo. Take the image (caricature of you) and place it inside the red large star so that it looks like you are emerging out of it and waving to the kids. This would look awesome and really tie in well with the type treatment. It would brand you more on a business card as it would show your name and your image as well. Let me know if you're interested and I can try and explain it a bit more and even perhaps do the modified art work for you. I like what you did for the ad. It works well as the type font is similar in style to your logo and you use the caricature art work well. It relates well to your brand image. I have another great idea for you that may come in handy for different promo material aspects. It is what we designers call secondary marks. A secondary mark is a second logo that stems off the main logo. It is very similar in style and treatment but just may change shape, etc. so it can be used on different applications. I see your main logo doing this quite well. You could use the A and W (initial caps) in the logo as a mark by itself. If you add in your cartoon image insise the negative space that is making up the star, it could work as a stand along mark. Just something to think about. Thanks for letting me see your ad and web site. I hope these answer your questions and give you some great ideas. I look forward to hearing from you and possibly helping you along the way. Joe: I loved your photo and loved your idea for making the photo into a logo that could really work for you. I took a look at your image and from a designers viewpoint, it could work excellent for a logo and could easily be converted to line art (aka, flat art) for a logo. The benefit for doing this, is that the flat art could be used and scaled to any size and still maintain perfect clarity. Also it would be so much cheaper to sun on all your promotions. I saw the image and the simple idea conversion that you had done. It looks great but needs a lot of refinement to make it read well and stand out. But, the good news is, it can be done. I have often done this sort of thing before in the past. I believe I sent to you my PDF file. In it you will see an image of a magician with a sword and flames from fingertips. This was flat art that was created from a photo. Your photo looks great and I think it could make an excellent logo for you. Please PM me if you're interested in how best to go about this. Thanks so much for sharing this with us all. I think sharing our art and logos with the forum really helps others to get ideas and to learn as well.

I can't figure out how to put my logo on here so I am going to put my web site on here that has my logo flying in.
http://www.kenscottmagic.com My logo has worked well for me for more than 10 years now. The main thing is that it is on everything from Ads to flyers to the front of my performance table. Which this also helps people remember my name and that is the most important thing you need. I hear it all the time people tell me they saw a great magician and I ask what their name was and they say they don't know. Thanks Ken |

Ken:
Thanks for posting your website here with your logo. It is great for everyone to be able to see samples of logos and what people are doing. It is also helpful for everyone to see what works and what does not and the reasons behind it. I really like your logo for several reasons. First, is that it is easily readable and has your performance name. It is clean and does not try to have way too much happening with it that the message would not get across to the target audience. But, I think there are 2 main points that I really like about it the most. First, is that the brand message you have coming off from your logo is that, your fun, comical and specialize in kids oriented magic. I get this message right away from the type font used in the logo. I also like the fact that your logo shows a perfect example of how a top hat can still be used but in a much different mannner then the same clip art we all have seen numerous times. It is still a top hat, but the top hat is stylized differently and having it hanging from the letter is a clever idea. You also mentioned that you use your logo on every piece of promotional material you have. That is so important to have consistency in your brand imaging. People need to know who you are and they will remember that from the image you portray in your shows and on your promotions. Too many people have the habit of changing their logo and look on every piece they own. They feel this way because they get bored with it and think that they can make it more fun by having it change. This is the biggest no-no you could possibly do. You want to always make sure that your image and message is consistent. Thanks again for sharing this with us all.

Ken did a mini-lecture for Ring 9 in Atlanta on the importance of getting people to remember your name. It's partly because of his influence that I am motivated to identify a consistent image for my own materials!

Joe: That is great about Ken doing a mini-lecture on such an important topic.
Getting people to remember who you are and what you do is the major part of what branding is all about and a consistent image and look on your materials is the way to go about this. A well developed logo that is used consistently with an effective brand message, really does work wonders. I would love to see and hear some of the points Ken brought up in his lecture. We could all learn from it.

I just want to thank Kyle for taking the time to share his knowlege with us, and to put in my praise for his work from my first hand experience. Kyle's a good friend of mine, and he's been instrumental both in advising me on some of my own design work and doing a couple of logos for me. (which typically blow the best of my self-done jobs out of the water, of course!)
Kyle did the logo for the 72 Hours convention I co-produced, as well as a new logo for my sound design company: As you can see, the dude knows his stuff! Thanks, Kyle! --A P.S. Kudos also to Kyle's friend Jon, who did the cartoon of Squeak, my new mascot!

Im looking for an online source for a one time Retractable Banner Stand or a vintage banner poster (like the old Houdini types) on parchment (I can by a cheap wooden easel) so I can hang it on the easel during my shows. Im ignorant in these matters but can do a nasty CT:) I can just have my slogan on top: The Greatest of All:), etc and a vintage magician drawing.
Thanks!

Cabdidni: Sounds like a great idea. You certainly can get and purcahse old easels that can break down and fit into a carrying bag. I have one I use often and it makes traveling with it easy. You can then have the banner made with string on the top sides so that it can be hung from the easel for a nice presentation for your show.
Another idea to think about is getting a banner made on vinyl and with grommets. This way if you use a backdrop for your shows, you can hang it from the backdrop with ease and it can be rolled up for storage. Also, because of the process used, it can be washed and withstand the elements fairly decently. Another idea is to have the above large enough that it becomes the entire backdrop to the show you are doing. I have seen this done as well and that also works to really add something special to the performance. It really is a matter of what works best for you and your performance. Just remember whenever getting any logo or print work done, always ask for proofs and samples first. Not every printer and not every designer are the same. You want to see what you are getting ahead of time before you invest a lot of money into something that has poor quality etc. Always ask for samples up front. The designer or printer will always give them to you if they know what they are doing and this can really help you cut out a lot of possible problems later on. Also, be aware of the process you are going to be using for your logo as well as the materials you are going to be using it on. A 4 color process logo looks great but can cost you a LOT of money if you have to run it offset printing for all your pieces. Here is where you will want to talk with a professional to find out what might look great but still save you money and brand yourself well with your materials. Hope this helps. Kyle

You are most welcome. I am glad you found a print. Just make sure that the print you want to use is copyright free so that you can use it for your own usage. Just something you will want to look into.
By stencil work, are you looking into getting lettering done to go along with the print? I ask as I may be able to help you or point you in the right direction for what might work out best for you. What process are you thinking of for having the final piece done? I may also be able to help you with options for that also. It would be my pleasure to assist you in any way if I can. It might also be fun to have a logo made in an old style that has your image as a silouette with nice type that would go along with the period look. This could then be used as a brand mark and carried over into other of your marketing materials. Just food for thought. I wish you the best with your project. If you, or anyone else, has ideas for marketing projects or logo design projects, let me know. Shoot me over a PM and I would be happy to help you out and offer some advice to you that may be of help. Look forward to hearing back from you and helping you along with your recent poster project. Great information. When I decided to develop a logo a few years back, I didn't have much money to invest, but I knew I needed a quality person to design it. I decided to just do a single color as I wanted it on my letterhead, envelopes, litterally everything I did and didn't want to spend the extra money (and it does cost more, unless your printing a gazillion copies).
My solution? 1800mylogo They were really great to work with, reasonably priced and I got what I wanted. Although my website is still under construction (I need more time in each day) the logo is an integral part of it. Check it out The Magic of Steven Steele.

Steven,
Great information here and thank you for the share. Having a quality logo design does not have to break your bank or your budget. The main thing to learn is that no matter who does the logo or how much money you invest in it, you need to make sure you adhere to certain guidelines as to what makes a quality logo that works for you and that brands you in the way you need it to so that is best represents you in your marketplace. Clip art has been used by many as a way to obtain an easy logo. I would say to try and stay awis as much as possible. Although the logo may end up looking nice, the problem lies in the fact that the logo is not unique or distinctive enough for what you do and the services you provide. It also means that there very well may be others in your own markets that are using a very similar or same clip art you are. This then only adds to confuse the prospect instead of making you stand out from the rest. One word of caution when working with any of the numerous online logo companies that exist online today. They are certainly good and are designers who do know what they are doing and can give you a quality logo at a great price. However, let me add a few things here so that anyone exploring this option can have some information before going forward. - Not all online design companies are the same. there are some pretty good quality ones and I can help anyone with those if anyone would like. My pleasure. The point here is that you will always want to check out their website and really take a good look at the portfolio section of the site. They should have a vast array of samples for you to look at. Study them and see if the style meets what you are looking for. If the logos are not plentiful, or they do not look right to you, then it is best to move onwards. - Always talk with the person at the online place before ever going forward with a logo design. It is very important that the designer give you enough time and ask you enough questions to really understand what it is you do and what makes your service different then the rest. If the place does not give you enough time or take enough time to really understand your business before they start the design process, then you should move on and find one that will take the time. It is important for the desugner to know just what makes you unique. - Also keep in mind that the designers at onbline design firms are good at what they do. However, they are not magicians and do not speak or talk the same language as you do. To them a magician looks and acts a certain way and a lot of them see magic as all the same. This can be a bad thing as it leads to designs that become very cliche to the artform of magic and to what you provide with your magic. You and I know that magic is vastly different and what we each provide is unique and our logo needs to reflect upon that. If you go this path, make sure to talk with the designer and get them to really understand your magic and your unique style. Just having a toiphat with a rabbit coming out may not suit you and the magic you do although the designer may think it says magic. I hope these are helpful for you and that it may help you if you go this route or are looking at creating or getting a logo done for your own services. I look forward to any comments on this or helping anyone out that I can. Once again, thanks Steve for posting this information as it is a way in which we can all learn. Kyle
