Ultimate newbie question no doubt, but I'll continue...
I have occasionally opened a new Bicycle deck, given it a couple of riffle shuffles, and find that the cards straight away generate a one-sided curve. I mean, they 'click' between bending concave and convex. (Am I making sense?). This is a little frustrating for various reasons. Is this normal for a new deck and should I persist? Or is it something I'm doing wrong when breaking in a new deck? Any thoughts, as always, are appreciated. Thanks, James |

Been a newbie and ask is not bad...all the opposite is very good. Now, where you from? This kind of card diseases occurs when cards are exposed to very hot conditions like let them in your car in a very sunny day or in a very hot room with all windows closed etc. Here in Puerto Rico I have that problem because the very HOT weather, we are here in winter in 80 degrees.. I'm with Jim - it's 25 degrees here (London), and wish I was in Puerto Rico! Our rented house doesn't feel much warmer than outside at the moment either, so not sure if that is the cause unfortunately. Anything you do to overcome this Hansel? Or just grin 'n bare it?

Well, when my cards are in this " Clicking" fashion I bring the out the room or the car to a more fresh place.
I understand that this could happen with cold too. Jim:I would be very happy is we have snow in Puerto Rico

James… I am not a card guy, but try putting your cards in your pocket and get them up to body temperature… at least for me cards seem to work better warm.

Another tip that has been mentioned previously is to alternate the cards, singularly, face up and face down and put them back in the card box. The next day they should be fine. After you straighten them out of course.
Guilt will betray you before technique betrays you!

Work them in by bending them the opposite way of the bow. Riffle and bridge them the opposite way too.

I have recently bought some new "standard" bikes, the ones in the goofy new box. I find these new cards to be VERY warped right out of the box, way more than I am accustom to. So warped in fact that they are practically useless. They pop and crackle more than any cards I have ever used. When cut in two, and placed back to back the deck has around a quarter inch gap on one end.
I have some older decks of Bikes, Squeezers, and Tallys that do not have that problem, they lay perfectly flat.
After much soul searching about a signature, I decided not to have one.

A card clip can help overcome this as well. The Joe Porper card clip is great, it keeps my decks in great condition. DavidPaul's advice is great and would work great in comination with a card clip too.

Stage Fright or performance anxiety is a very real and common affliction that most performers at one time or another experience. I have coped with it for over 20 years since I first began performing magic. Wikipedia, the online encyclopedia, describes Stage Fright in this way “Stage fright or performance anxiety is the anxiety, fear, or persistent phobia which may be aroused in an individual by the requirement to perform in front of an audience, whether actually or potentially (for example, when performing before a camera). In the context of public speaking, this fear is termed glossophobia, one of the most common of phobias. Such anxiety may precede or accompany participation in any activity involving public self-presentation.”
I was visiting with a friend and discussing his last performance when he confessed to me that every time he is about to perform in public he is afflicted by stage fright. He had seen me perform several times including in different venues. He asked me how come I had never had a bout of stage fright. I told him something that took him by surprise. I suffer from stage fright each and every time I perform. Sometimes for just a little while, but sometimes it grips me so tightly that I start to doubt that I could actually do my set. Most of the time, it goes away when I start. But there have been times when I just couldn’t shake it. But I have found that there are a few things that can help. I good night’s sleep is one of the best things that I can do for myself before performing. Practicing my set until I can do it in my sleep really helps. Also, keeping my mind in the present, and not dwelling on the possibility of failure. Have fun!! Most of the time my stage fright goes away as soon as I start to have fun with my audience. Magic is unique in the way in which you can interact with others during your performance. Also ,I no longer drink, not even socially. Since I have stopped drinking I have noticed that my stage fright is much less severe. If you are like me and suffer from this affliction, try some of these suggestions that have helped me and let me know if they help you too. The "quality" of Bicycle cards has sometimes varied so much that I have found myself opting for Aviator cards instead. The original air cushion finish was great, but in the 90's I think they began to give them a new finish that made them extremely slippery. I found that applying fanning powder via shaking in a paper bag took away some of the slipperiness.
Aviator cards are available at my local grocery store, so I figure audiences are very familiar with them, perhaps more so even than the Bicycle cards. The faces of the cards look identical to Bicycle. They, like Bicycle cards, are made by U.S. Playing Card company. There was a brand of cards that came out a few years ago--perhaps the brand name was Casino--wrapped in foil when you took them out of the case. I think the idea was that the foil wrapping would keep them from warping. The decks never caught on, though. ----- Amado "Sonny" Narvaez

Thanks Anatole - a bit trickier/more expensive to get in the UK. I'll keep with the bicycles for the moment. Only this one pack has let me down so far, and that was only for a relatively short time. I'll try purchasing a clip first and see how works out (ta, Scaevola).
Don't worry Silverwingedrat, the clicking cards are not causing stage fright!! So I'm not really understanding your relevance to this post. |

I doubt that you have a bad deck. The "clicks", as I understand it, is caused by changes in temperature and humidity. I live in Houston, which can get some pretty wild fluctuations in both, and I've had decks be perfect one day, "clicky" to the point of being unusable the next, to perfectly fine again the day after. I've heard people suggest putting bad decks in a ziplock in the freezer with silica gel packs to restore them. I've also heard suggestions to store unused decks in the crisper bin of the fridge. I haven't tried either yet, but I may just to experiment.

I'm currently having exactly the same problem and found that it's almost certainly to do with this incredible cold spell we're having at the moment.
I found that, as suggested, getting them up to body temperature gets them back to a useable state, though I must admit, I thought I was going a bit mad when I first encountered it lol |

JC - you mentioned COSTCO. I have a 12 pack brick from COSTCO and I find that some of the decks seem to be of a lower quality than others. Not sure if they are buying 2nds (I highly doubt it - Bicycle might not sell these at all.) Any others with thoughts on this?
Specifically - one deck (have not opened all, either) doesn't square up when scrambled (end for end). It's currently 23 degrees F here in the Dallas, Texas area - so I will pull out a fresh deck to see if it "clicks". I also have a few new specialty decks from Bicycle that I can check, too. That is, if I don't get stage fright
