The Case of Charles Dexter Ward. By H.P. Lovecraft
The part in the cellar is easily the scariest thing I’ve read. If you read some Lovecraft such as At the Mountains of Madness and The Call of Cthulhu, then read The Mist by King, you will see the influence of Lovecraft on King. Chris |

Intensity - Dean Koontz, this is a radical book. It invokes basic fears and puts you with the main character big time. Its more of a thriller, but is adept in raising simple fears.
The Cellar - Richard Laymon. Dark, Very Dark. This is abit of a sick book, but does the job well. You will not forget this story soon. SICK! Midnight's Lair - Richard Laymon. Set in a cave with some nasty denzines. Nasty stuff. The Stand - Stephen King. A long read, a good read. A top premise. Characters that you feel you know. A well executed thiller that touches on horror. Cujo - Stephen King. Nuff said! Kootz has gone abit weird of late. He must know some afflicted people in his life and writes about them. of late he seems to focus on XP (Xeroderma Pigmentosum) or Downsyndrome.

They may not be the scariest books ever written, but over the last 4 days I read Rosemary's Baby, and Son of Rosemary. The latter is a FANTASTIC book! The former is good, but because I have seen the movie, I knew what was coming. If you are a fan of Rosemary's Baby, I cannot recommend Son Of Rosemary enough! I never saw the ending coming. Don't think that you have it figured out, because I promise you, YOU DON'T!

Dpe666 I am going to get that book, Thanks !!
When it first came out I couldn't finish reading it but it was Whitley Strieber's Communion. Years later I bought & read Transformation. I don't know if he was really abducted by UFO's or not, but he has some kind of insite into dreams & the subconcious mind that really hit home. I could really relate to some of the things he was shown by the "visitors".

Dpe666 may I recommend A trilogy by a UK writer called Peter F. Hamilton. It covers a whole realm of the undead molesting the living in sick ways. It has heros and villans (including Al Capone, I kid you not). It is a space opera with some serious dynamics.
If you don't get a kick out of the first book, I will refund you the $$ and send you the next 2 books from my collection. (I will want them posted back). The first in the Tri' is 'The reality Dysfunction'. Then 'The Neutronium Alchemist' fin is 'The Naked God'

Also, I think Black Hawk Down, was a dang scary book. I was crying when I read parts of the book. It is a strong book about human folly and the strong spirit that gets us through those times when it can't get worse, but does.
Ps. Dpe666, You are looking at 1200 pages per book aprox. I think you will find Quinn Dexter an endering character.

An E-book is attached to this message: The picture in the house by H.P.Lovecraft
"Pet Semetary" - Stephen King; the scariest novel I've read. (when I was reading the scariest part in the end in the middle of the night my friend knocked harshly on my bedroom window.. man) The most disturbing story I've read is the short story by Howard Phillips Lovecraft - THE PICTURE IN THE HOUSE. Read it and tell me what you think. While you read it try to imagine how you would feel if you were the main character. The only con is that it's written in older style than for example Kings books.. still it gets the message through. I read the story from "The best of H.P. Lovecraft - Bloodcurdling tales of horror and the macabre". I recommend real book 'cause e-book might not have the same feel. Try your library or something. But if you decide to download it and read it (it's attached to this message) promise to read it late before you go to sleep and in the right mood. Maybe it's just something personal for me.. but I that story really did make me feel uneasy. Click here to view/download attached file. |

I have read a few king stories from the dreamscapes collection. a few were very good but some were silly. I obviously havent read enough of his work to comment fully on that.
Just a point I think has failed to be mentioned. Somebody near the start said they had read Dracula by Bram Stoker and said it wasnt scary. A common misconception of this story is that it is primarily a horror, which it isn't. It is a love story. Just a thought. I recently read haunted by james herbert which was very good, and am currently halfway through the day after tommorow by robert heinlien. this is an old book and is nothing to do with the new movie of the same name.

Personally, King's "The Shining" did me in.
Now I fear writer's block more than ever . . . Come to think of it . . . I'm strictly a shower kind of guy now too. Glad to see some Lovecraft made it on the list. Anyone for Poe?

Scary, though? My criteria for that would have to be: coming back to get me at odd moments, long after the work was read. Strictly psychologically, Bradbury's "Night Call, Collect" does that, or Gilman's "The Yellow Wallpaper", though both are shorts. For making me look over my shoulder, or fearing the thing under the stairs, King wins with the short "Boogeyman" and novels "The Shining" and "IT". |

Since the topic is simply 'the scariest book' with nothing said about fiction or non....my vote would be M. Scott Pecks, "The People of the Lie", his study of evil people. There were several sections that literally made my blood run cold.
