Aged about 9 (yes, printing techniques had been developed then!) - a Pan Book of Horror Stories. Good! Now? - most medical encyclopaedias - all those diseases you can get when you've turned **!! Talking about The Shining, BBC Radio 1 listeners voted this movie as the scariest ever, - shows that good acting and a good story can beat the pants off all the special effects gizmos what?

I have a few that rank up there that I would say were scary to me...
Invasion of The Body Snatchers by Jack Finney: this was a great book to read... very creepy. The Shining by Stephen King: as already mentioned. Warday by Whitley Strieber: Very scary in its realism in handling of a 3rd world war. If you haven't ever heard of this book do a little internet searching and check it out or better yet, get it and read it; it is very good (a bit dated, supposedly taking place in 1988, but very good). The scariest and most inspirational is
"The Holy Bible" (too many authors to mention within post). However, Huck Finn remains my favorite. <Randy nervously looks out for chain lightning> |

The scariest story (not book) I've read so far is one of the short stories in Ramsey Campbell's "Alone with the Horrors" fiction collection.
It's called either "Call First" or "Heading Home" (I forget which one), and it's about an old guy who always calls home to say he's on his way. When you find out WHY he's doing that you'll get chills. At least I did |

My favorite book is probably Bram Stoker's Dracula. It is the most indepth piece of literature without getting boring I have EVER read.
The most frightening...The Shining scared me to death for a month or more. The movie sucked big time. Ugh! The newer one by Stephen King is much better! Jakks |

I'm on the 3rd story of that skeleton Crew collection. The 3rd isn't very good until now, the 2nd was useless BUT the 1st ( The Mist ) had me hooked. One of the best short stories I've ever read, highly recommended.

Dr. Jakks, you must be insane! Jack Nicholson's performance in The Shining (along with the other actors) turned another mediocre offering into a masterpiece and made Stephen King's reputation to boot!

Stephen King wasn't happy with the adaptation if I remember right. I admit I saw the movie first (good movie, great Jack), but after I read the book I realized how much was missing from the movie and how much better it could have been. Same with "Gone With The Wind". "The Godfather" however, managed to out-do the book (at least for me).

Stephen King´s IT is propably the most scariest I have ever read.
The 2nd scariest is a publication about mental illness and personality disorders. They did warn us beforehand (at college) that you can find bits of yourself everywhere in that book. They sure were right. We were pretty sure that instead of graduating our class should´ve been committed...

The Scariest book?
Deadspawn, by Brian Lumley. Most of his stuff chilled me to the bone. The stuff his characters did to one another...
