Okay, for all you "The Exorcist" lovers out there, I give you the scariest book I've read recently (I don't read a lot of scarey books). It's a non-fiction book (if you believe the author) by a NY police officer who, in his spare time, performs exorcisms on the East Coast. The book chronicles his work over the past decade or two.
Scared the crap out of me. I'm one of those people who "doesn't believe in ghosts, but is afraid of them" (to paraphrase someone quoted in Ortiz's Strong Magic--thank you Mr. Kaufman for re-printing this!). So I was paranoid for about 2 weeks after reading it. It's not going to win any prizes, but it's conversational tone made it even more believable and frightening for me. Okay, I'll come out and say it: it's poorly written, but it still scared me. Also, those who are not a fan of the Catholic Church may be too put-off by the whole "Hey I'm not saying trying to convert anybody, but you're on your own without God" tone, to be scared by the book's contents. Also, hardcore Catholics are probably also going to be put-off by some of things Sarchie talks about that aren't really in-line with those teachings. (Auras, witchcraft, etc.) So, if you find yourself in the middle and just wanna be spooked, this may do it for 6 or 7 bucks. It's called, "Beware the Night", by Ralph Sarchie. Read it before you go to bed every night. You'll get through it in a week, and will know whether your in the camp that loved it or the one that hated it. [As a side note: I learned about the book on Art Bell's radio program, when he interviewed Officer Sarchie. He sounds so dang down-to-earth and matter-of-fact, that it's hard not to believe the fella's telling the truth as he see's it ("She's telling the truth, or at least she thinks she is"---Egon, Ghostbusters). Anyway, on Amazon.com, the book went from ranked in the thousands to #15 during the radio show. So I had to buy it I love this scarey crap!] |

Let me start by saying I HATE hrror movies. They do not scare me. At least not the gore ones. If I go the theater, you will hear me laughing while everyone maons in disgust. (A good example is in Halloween H2O when Michelle Williams is crawing dragging her bleeding stump of a leg behind her.)
On the other hand I love Horror Books. Stephen King is my favorite author of all time, and I have read everything of his I can. I have also read many of the other things mentioned here, from Poe to the Exorcist. Only one book has ever made me want to leave the lights on at night... the previosuly mentioned "The Shining"
Magic is like Science,
Both are fun if you do it right! |

"Who Goes There" by John W. Campbell, a great story that spawned two movies. Definitely recommended.
I would vote for "Dracula" as well, the part in the castle gave me the creeps. Anything that has been in print since 1897 must have somthing going for it. |

Most books don't scare me. Even the Exorcist didn't do much. This one did. First half of the book made it hard for me to sleep. |

Ghost Story by Peter Straub. Also when I was small there was a book called The Patchwork Monkey and something something. Pretty scary stories for children. Wish I could find it again.

I'll second the motion for "Ghost Story", "The Shining" (which had it ALL OVER the movie), and "Salem's Lot". All three were difficult to read alone in the house... and I really can't say that about any other books.

House of Leaves - Danielewski, though not for the reasons most people think. It was personally disturbing in a psychological sort of way. I read it at probably the worst time imaginable.

Technically, the scariest book I've ever read is MEIN KAMPF by Adolph Hitler.
BEHOLD A PALE HORSE by William H. Cooper runs a close second. In the horror genre(pronounced "Zhan-rah" not "John-rah.")(Sorry... pet peeve), I would say any book by Phillip Laymon. I use to love Stephen King but I think Tabitha wrote GERALD'S GAME and some of the more recent books. Did you notice that Tabitha stopped writing altogether and Stephen's output doubled around the time GERALD'S GAME came out? He was putting out a new book every six months! Any book will sell 5 million copies with the words BY STEPHEN KING on the cover. Just a theory, folks! |

Curious george. This was a incredibly frightening journey into the mind of a deranged animal intent on the extinction of all humanity. At least this is how it came across to me.
Magic is doing improbable things with odd items that, under normal circumstances, would be unnessecary and quite often undesirable.
