Doug Roberts had a useful idea: Let's start a thread with no pro or con opinions, but rather, a discussion of legitimate presentational ideas for the "Little Man" prop.
There have been a number of suggestions buried amidst the posts in other threads. They included changing the character for the purposes of plots or to fit the walking style of John Dough, e.g., Frankenstein, a penguin, a baby, clown, Golem, etc. And another positive creative angle would be to discuss what magic effects could be done by little man, including the two in the original demo vid (the match lighting the flash paper and LM turning to select a random object.) Someone suggested a card discovery with tiny cards. Please leave the pro/con arguments out of this thread. For all the creative-types out there, please post your adults/kids/bizarre/sci-fi/etc. presentational ideas here when you have time. There were some really good ideas posted in one of the threads which was deleted. If those guys happen to read this, maybe they could repost their ideas. One was a cool bizarrist routine. Thanks, folks! Steve H

Another really good one I forgot to re-post was the "moon walk".

Let's follow Mr. Muggle's lead (on another thread) as he came very close to the "walking" solution.
Maybe form a Penguin which walks almost exactly as a real Penguin. I am sure you can create many story lines for the little Black n White suited bird or anything else you can sculpt with a theme to fit the shuffle. Maybe a Michael Jackson concept aint to bad...not sure if I want to go there creatively yet If we begin to think outside the box I am sure many cool ideas will come forth. Chance

What's the real source of global warming? A psychotic penguin who lights a pile of snow (crumbled FP) on fire.
This would be a good one to do at Al Gore's birthday party...

I've got an effect that was on Reel Magic, where several stickmen are drawn on a piece of card and one is selected by a spectator. They write the initals of someone they dislike on the (flash) paper, and place it over the stickman.
You light it, a flash of fire, and then the little guy as gone. It was called Visual Voodoo, and I think any voodoo based presentation works really well for Little Man. I love the idea of him walking over to light the paper in a voodoo ritual! |

I kind of like the selecto-matic approach. The audience helps build Little Man. He comes to life and picks a miniature card previously chosen by an audience member similar to the Albright Bird Trick / Don Alan's Ranch Bird. Then the Little Man is handed to the audience member as a keepsake.
Personally, I think the animation is fine - amazing, in fact. But, I do think that the effect needs a pretty good pay off at the end. Robert |

Might a ski ( James Bond used one ski in On Her Majesty's Secret Service ) or a snowboard be effective?
Or...Even mold a snowman, like in Rudolph from the 1960's? The Burl Ives Snowman sort of moved like Little Man. Or, for the VERY adult crowd, mold it I to Michael Jackson's nose ( his reportedly came off ) and have it move, looking, for Jacko. I know, a bit cryptic, but weave a story about it ( taking it out of the bag, giving a use for the bag ). Juts some ideas off thew top of my head. Chris Kavanagh

Hmm.... this has possibilities. How about Little Man picks the only card or object associated with "poison" or "death" and then falls over dead? That would be a big pay off for the effect.
Hey, it's better than Michael Jackson's nose!#$%! Just kidding Chris! Robert |

Yet another thread on Little Man? You guys are making Bill Hallahan work overtime.
How much weight can you add to Little Man before he stops walking? This condition is critical to this made up presentation of mine. A crafty wedding performer could have a miracle on their hands by "using" the bride and groom that are on top of the wedding cake. Little Man could carry the bride across the table.

Wonder if you could use white dough and make him look like a Mummy.
Instead of a red heart you could use two red beads for eyes and he could carry a burning incense stick to light a flash paper for a reveal. I love mummies !!!! |

Oh, the Mummy would be cool. LM walks just like Karloff in the original. Have him walk and burn tannah leaves ( flash paper ) for a revelation?

Perhaps you could wrap the clay in bandages, and the effect will still work?
I probably will choose to make a pirate figure, and present a mentalism effect. It would be nice for him to find a card that the spectator has merely thought of. It might be cool to either vent a squeaky voice, or just to have a squeaker, so he can make a noise as he walks. Another thought I had was to sing the old song "Little Man You've Had a Busy Day" as he walks. I'll tell of a young boy who wanted to be a pirate, and after playing pirates all day, he chooses his favourite pirate toy (selected by a kid), which he's going to take to bed. Now if he can fall over at the end, I can time it to correspond with the phrase "Better go to sleep now, little man you've had a busy day", which is the last line of the song. He found the toy, and straight away fell asleep. |

Larry Davidson made this comment in another post:
Re. something that might "walk" like that in real life, how about a baby crawling on all fours, with the bag decorated as a baby gift bag? I'm not sure if the crawling would work given the mechanics of this effect, since the figure would be longer than taller, it would touch the bag in four places, and what would the paper on the knees and elbows represent, kneepads and elbowpads? Even if it would work, I'd want the crawling to be a means to an end versus an end itself. Maybe instead of a baby crawling, it could be a man crawling on all fours to lay carpet, or a car with a poor GPS system and a dotted white line drawn on the black bag to represent a road? And Acecardician had this idea in another thread: I'm wondering if little man can fall over onto a toothpick... That would be fun. Or have different colored tooth picks set up at an angle, and little man falls onto the chosen one. And we blindfold him before his destruction... This was the Ray Noble bizarrist idea I thought was lost. Good one, Ray: Quote:
This would freak people out with the right bizarre scripting. Add a pendulum, candle w/incense and a book of shadows and you have a heart throbbing bizarre routine. This one from oombob: Quote:
This looks like a lot of fun, but I would be more inclined to give him a square head and call him "Little Robot". Roth wrote: Quote: Now if you tore off little pieces of the business card and folded them up around his feet and drew two little wheels on the sides it would look like he was skating.

Steve Hook, Thank you for starting this very useful, creative, educative and healthy thread.
I like the ideas of a SNOWMAN, PENGUIN and MUMMY. SNOWMAN - For a mixed audience. PENGUIN - For the little ones. MUMMY - For the adults. All three know how to walk - the way Little-Man does!

The Snowman idea is great! You can even throw down some "fake" snow (hence the need now for that bag---as to not make a mess). If this will work with a round bottom you guys now have a real winner.
Good magic to all, Eric |
