Nefesch,
You have lost much for this art of ours. I really don't know anyone who has sacrificed so much for mentalism. Your story is a powerful one and shows how a lack of knowledge can really up-set lives. We never make a deal with the devil to learn this wonderful art---we only promise ourselves to be the best we can and learn as much as we can. I look forward to your pdf and count me in. Good magic to all, Eric Ps for anyone who has not read his story please go to his web-site and read it. |

It's not like I'm HOPING to come up against such prejudice though. Usually, the prejudice I come up against is atheists hating Christianity or some Protestant religion making false claims against this one. But this case - for an entire country to fear this guy...Whew! I just read your story, Mr. Flores. I admire your integrity to stand by your values when so much is at stake. Best of luck, and many well wishes.
PS, in English, "brake" is what you do to stop the car, but "break" is what happens when a glass is dropped on the ground. |

Nefesch,
I can somewhat relate to your story. I had a similar background. My whole family was very religious and was convinced all magicians were of the devil. Growing up I would order magic catalogs and find my mother had x out all the pages, saying this is wrong and of the devil. My father would find my hidden collection of magic books and do as the bible said, BURN THEM. Every few months there were fires in my backyard as magic books would be burned, while saying it was for my own good. I too had a grandmother who supported my magic when I was younger, I was able to order things and have it sent to her home so my family couldn't see or destroy it. My family had entire church groups praying that I would stop this evil. My family was convinced I was demon possessed because of the mentalism I did. It gets worse, when I was in my early 20s, my parents had me abducted and taken to a place several states away. Why? So the elders could conduct an exorcism on me! I was tied to bed for over a day and prayers and holy water were cast on me in attempts to cast out the demon. Finally, I played along with them and pretended that a demon had been cast out of me (no such luck.)At that point I was set free and returned to my family. A week later I turned my back on my family and never looked back. I left and moved far away to continue my career as a magician and mentalist. I know the pain you went thru, because I and others have been there. Good luck with your PDF. I will be buying one for sure. Devin Knight |

--Grandpa,
I have never come across this either. I too believe in the Lord and read the Scriptures daily. I have only had a few off comments made by Café members about me being a Christian and a magician/mentalist. But I truely believe it was more in a humorous way. Anyone who knows me knows I have three loves in this world. God is first, my wife Amy is second and Mentalism/magic is third. When someone says to me "you can't be a Christian and a magician also" I say to them simply "That is exactly what I am." But I have never faced what others have. Now to read Devin went through what he did is an eye opener too. I can see how such things could make someone question God. However, I hope people realize that God IS NOT behind such activity that we read above. This was done by people who were simply ignorant and afraid. And in life we all know ignorance and fear can be most damaging. Good magic to all, Eric |

Just read his story. While it's interesting, and I feel for him, I couldn't help but think it sounds like a real-life religious parable!
Boy is religious. Parents warn him to stay away from "occult". Boy's curiosity lead him to search for occult. He finds it, and becomes obsessed with harnessing it's secrets and power. He has to hide it from his family and friends. Eventually he is discovered and cast out of the church because of his association with the devil. He ends up alone and an outcast. Eventually he ends up in purgatory ("Right now, Nefesch is in the Torture phase...") until he is willing to cast aside Satan and gives up the occult. But he refuses, and must continue to endure the "torture" as he wages his war against the religious doctrine. The End. Freaky. Ben
If you're reading this you're my favourite magician.

Yeah to follow up on that, there is nothing in the scriptures that says anything that yours or Devin's parents did is condoned by God. In fact the exact oposite is true. It sounds like your family is not spiritual they are just kinda crazy especially in Devins case.

Not trying to turn this into a religious article but for those who want to know what is used for those who do this type of thing. Yes these scriptures APPARENTLY CONDONE what they did.Read em and weep! “When you come into the land which the LORD your God is giving you, you shall not learn to follow the abominations of those nations. There shall not be found among you anyone who makes his son or his daughter pass through the fire [an ancient occult practice], or one who practices witchcraft, or a soothsayer, or one who interprets omens, or a sorcerer, or one who conjures spells, or a medium, or a spiritist, or one who calls up the dead. For all who do these things are an abomination [detestable] to the LORD…” -Deuteronomy 18:9-12a FOR THOSE WHO PRACTICE MINDREADING..this scripture is used to condemn you to hell. …For you have trusted in your wickedness… Therefore evil shall come upon you… trouble shall fall upon you… Let now the astrologers, the stargazers, And the monthly prognosticators stand up and save you from what shall come upon you. Behold, they shall be as stubble, The fire shall burn them; They shall not deliver themselves from the power of the flame… -Isaiah 47:10-14a WHY I SUFFERED THROUGH AN EXOCERISM In some instances, occult magic or divination are a manifestation of demonic powers or the result of demon possession (Acts 16:16). Of course, the power of Satan and his demons is extremely limited compared to God's power. God warns of the ultimate punishment. Revelation 21:8 says of "…those who practice magic arts …their place will be in the fiery lake of burning sulfur… the second death" (NIV). Those who practice witchcraft (sorcery) will not inherit the kingdom of God (Galatians 5:20-21). These practices are anti-God and are in rebellion against Him. WHY MY MAGIC BOOKS WERE BURNED Many of citizens of ancient Ephesus practiced the magic arts. Those who became Christians realized the foolish error of their former lives and burned their expensive books of magic as the trash they were (Acts 19:19) 19 -Many of them also which used curious arts brought their books together, and burned them before all men: and they counted the price of them, and found it fifty thousand pieces of silver. FINALLY, How my HEADLINE PREDICTIONS got me in MAJOR trouble with my religious family. After all a headline prediction is apparently predicting the future and few mentalist doing headline predictions say it is a trick, otherwise it kills the illusion. However these scriptures apparently Ban HEADLINE PREDICTIONS.So much for my Glass Box Prediction: The Bible provides examples showing the folly and failures of those who claimed the ability to predict the future based on their own powers or those of spirits (Daniel 2:27, etc.). God calls the word of diviners “nonsense,” “lies” and “deception” for foolish people (Ezekiel 13:8; Jeremiah 14:14; Isaiah 44:25). God said, "Woe to the foolish prophets who follow their own spirit and have seen nothing!" (Ezekiel 13:3). If an Israelite lived the deceitful practice of being a medium, it was punishable by death (Leviticus 20:27). The presence of a medium or spiritist among God's people of Israel was considered a defilement (Leviticus 19:31). All these practices take people further from their Creator, the true and living God. There you have it, the reasons and scriptures used to condemn me and I'm sure in one way or another Nefesch's family knew of these scriptures or something similar in whatever religion they believed in. I wanted to add one thing to the above. The arrival of Bob Nelson's Enterprise catalog was FUEL to the fire. When my parents saw his catalog full of books on how to be a medium, cold reading, astrology pitches, fake seance supplies. Books on predicting the future. I think my mother almost had a heart attack when she saw such an evil book full of books on how to do the devil's work!
Not to mention I had ordered many of the Nelson books on Cold reading and Answering questions. All these things were condemned in the scriptures. My parents never realized these were tricks and not real powers from seeing the ads. They foolishly thought Nelson was selling the kind books that the people in the bible burned. Enough said on this subject. I don't want to get this thread off on another tangent. Lets focus on the wonderful PDF that is about to be released. |

Since you were permitted to use scripture to show how people can misinterpret them, permit me to show that they *are* being misinterpreted. This, as Psalms 56:5 shows, is not a new problem.
The "ancient occult practice" to which you refer is infant sacrifice. I really don't think the Lord was off-base by condemning this. Other references refer to idolatrous uses of real attempts at trying to use real power to really gain power over other people. There are many misinterpretations which crept in early translations (the Vulgate, for instance, but even the Septuagint had radical deletions and editorial interference, as charged by Justin Martyr early on. For instance, the verse we have as Exodus 22:18 said the nation should not suffer a murderer to live, not to kill a witch. Quite a difference. Obviously, what the Lord actually says/said vs what people SAY He says/said would make no difference to someone who had already made up their mind. I feel the blame should be laid at the feet of those who wrest scripture to their own destruction, not against scripture itself. And even then, we are called upon to forgive those who despitefully use and abuse us -- not in spite of their wickedness, but because we and they each need to forgive and be forgiven. It does not excuse them. So let's identify where the problem really is. *jeep!..and God Bless! --Grandpa
