I am heading to New Orleans next Sunday and may have some time to meet up with any of my bizarre brothers or sisters if any are around. I will be there for a few days.
Also, I know that there is plenty spooky to do in New Orleans and I have been there several times. Nonetheless, let me know if there is something I shouldn't miss. |

Hi Paul,
I just got back from there! Definitely check out a few cemeteries: I toured St. Louis No. 1 (French Quarter, site of Marie Laveau's family crypt) and Lafayette (Garden District). Of the tours, I'd recommend Historic New Orleans -- the emphasis is on history rather than sensationalism. Lucky break: my tour guide for St. Louis No. 1 was Anna Ross Twichell, a major preservationist in town whose name appears on cemetery dedication plaques in honor of her work. http://www.tourneworleans.com/ If I'd had time, I would also have visited Metairie Cemetery; Anna Ross says this is probably the prettiest of the cemeteries, and Frommer's agrees: http://www.frommers.com/destinations/neworleans/A25407.html The St. Louis Cemetery tour mentioned above will also take you to a legitimate Voodoo temple, where you might have an audience with Priestess Miriam, a highly respected member of the community. http://www.voodoospiritualtemple.org/about.htm Lastly, Historic New Orleans does an evening tour of haunted locations and their stories; something I'm saving for my next visit. Safe travels, Neil

Thanks Neil. The cemeteries were already on my schedule but you helped narrow it down. Also nice info on the tours. Much appreciated. You made my itinerary for my trip.
I hope this cold front moves out before then. Us Southerners aren't used to this cold weather! |

Hey Neil;
You are really spooky. If I were in New Orleans I sure would find a lot more to do other visit a whole bunch of cemeteries. I'm sure your more fun in person. I'll be living in one soon enough. Before that happens, we have to get to see your great show in Chicago. Dick Brooks

Actually, the cemeteries in New Orleans are interesting places. I was born and raised in New Orleans and lived right next to Metairie Cemetary for the first 24 years of my life. Burials in New Orleans are above ground.

Glad to be of service, Paul!
Dick: don't get the impression that this is all I did in NOLA. Rest assured there was also dining, dancing, shopping, and live jazz. Lived in new orleans for more than 20 years, played in a cajun band called "allen Fontenot and the country cajuns" on bourbon street, as to spooky, the cemetaries have been mentioned, but no one mentioned the "voodoo museum"at 724 Dumaine street in the quarter, I worked there as a reader for a while before moving to NC,and the film industry,,

I can recommend the following, themortuary.net
There are friendly and talented performers there. Also, the Musee Conti Wax Museum has a rather well done dungeon. http://www.neworleanswaxmuseum.com |

I would HIGHLY reccomend the Voodoo Museum!! It is now run by a man named "John T." and he is not only a Voodoo Priest, but a Druid as well. Trust me, this man is the real deal....He is constantly embraced by his 12 snake "Jolie Blonde" .....Quite the experience meeting the both of them....Was definitely the highlight of my trip...

I can't speak for all of them, gaddy, but all three of the ones listed above are in good shape.

Burials in New Orleans are above ground. Also investigate the reburial procedures. Since space is limited, the bodies are allowed to decompose, then reburied, often in a chamber under the main tomb.
