Hello fello magi!

I've been a member of magic Café for a couple of years now, but have only occasionally posted. I've a bit of the hermit in me when it comes to the magic community at large: often, when I've used the internet as a tool to see what other performers are up to, it has left me feeling creatively stifled. The Magic Café, however, seems to be an oasis - a rich community, and I'm looking forward to growing as a performer by opening up here.

My story - out of college (14 years ago, I'm 36 now), I decided to pursue the childhood dream that Doug Henning ignited in me. I starting doing restaurant close-up work, which led to a 10-year career performing at corporate jobs & Sea World (San Diego). Over those years, I found myself experimenting less & taking fewer risks. I had a repertoire that served the purpose. Eventually, the impossible happened - magic had largely lost its spark for me & became a "job" Smile

It's been over four years now since I "retired" as a professional magician. During much of this time, I've devoted a tremendous amount of energy creating the dark, fantastic, & otherworldy environment that the boy in me always wanted to create. Actually, it's been a co-creation with my closest friend, Erica, who is as fully-committed as I toward fleshing this fantasy out and making it a reality. Our show is called "Phantoccino, Resurrecting the Spirit of Magic". Feel free to take a peek at our site (www.Phantoccino.com) & get a sense of our tastes.

As I get older, I'm starting to "see" my natural blindspots & limitations. It is my hope that critical self-evaluation with like-minded artists, we will become more fully-realized performers.

So here's to collective magical dreaming Smile
Keith (and Erica, who will eventually do her own introductions)

Welcome. I am one of those grown-up kids (now 65) who wonders where the theater magic went? Did Doug Henning take it with him? With audiences numbed by video games, iPhones, "eye candy" internet sites and mindless Hollywood cgi, where can they find a live, enchanting experience? Check out a book entitled
"The Necessity of Theater"-as it discusses at length the responsibility of both the performer and the audience to collectively create "magic".
Best of luck

Nothing is truer than the incomprehensible, because the sum total of our knowledge consists of the fact that we know nothing. Our reality is an illusion. Thus illusion is reality-Punx

Appreciate the welcome, everyone!

WkitWizard:

Woodruff's definition of theater:
"Theatre is the art by which human beings make human action worth watching, in a measured time and space."

has me excited to check the book out - thanks!

Hi Keith. I know what you mean. I got that way about music. I happen to be lucky
because magic is my second career and it's still exiting and fun to me. I'm also starting to teach which I find very rewarding.(I hated school!)
