A Johnson Products new Ultimate Expanded Shell for english penny was listed on ebay for $30 and I bought it. 4 pennys and the shell.
Having never worked with a shell before, I searched the forum and read good things about Johnson products and the price seemed right. I recived it today and my questions is about the shell fit. An actual english penny seems to be very loose in the gaff. It falls in and out. In addition the shell edge does not fully cover the real coin. Should the gaff fit tighter? Is it possible this is not a Johnson coin? MuleePete |

The ultimate shell should fit over a regular expanded shell.

Just to make sure I understand, there needs to be three items for the effect?
- the ultimate shell - a standard shell - a regular english penny Is that right? MuleePete |

No, that's not correct.
Johnson named it the Ultimate Expanded Shell because they found a new to expand the coin. It should fit over normal English pennies. You do not need another Expanded Shell to use with it as stated above. |

MuleePete,
If this is your first look a shell, then yes your gaff is fine. They are not supposed to fit tight and lock etc. Not the purpose of the gaffus. Depending on the quality, there may be a little play. My Johnsons do. The insert coin should come in and out effortlessly. Look up some coin matrix routines on here and the Tube. This may help. On your other question; to get full coverage on a coin really takes some custom work. It usually takes an unexpanded shell and shaved and milled coins and even then a QUALITY job to get 100% coverage (usually 97% and about 10 times what you paid for that set. None the less, work with the set you bought. You can do miracles with it with some practice I can assure you! Look for Shadow Coins by Ammar and take off with it. Be forwarned though.....they (sets) multiply worse than rabbits in your magic room!!! Good luck and welcome to the sh[[! Christian |

There are really no shell that covers a coin 100%...it's impossible unless the 'regular" coin has been machined to a very narrow rim. Walkers are the worst. I own many Lassen, Schoolcraft, and Johnson shells and none cover entirely a regular coin

MuleePete,
George is right, none cover 100% on regular coins! I too have gaffus made by all the custom makers and in many cases my Johnson's rank righ up there with fit and cover! When working on a good close up pad you'll find that it's more deceptive and if you think about it your spectators eyes are looking down upon the coins in play, not at edge level! Just because YOU know whats sneaky doesn't mean THEY do! Don't run if you're not being chased! MMc |

MuleePete,
I have the Johnson Ultimate Expanded Shell in Clad Kennedy halves. It fits just like your English Penny version. Good luck, and check out David Roth's Shell coins across. A great place to start. Sammy

Thanks Guys, for all the help. Nice to find a forum that has folks ready to freely share. I really appreciate it.
Hey Sammy J. Do you pass by Bryce Canyon, Ruby's Inn as you trek between Colorado and Arizona? That is where I work in season, at the new Ebenezers Barn and Grill Cowboy Supper & Live Western Show. I live in St. George Utah the rest of the time. Would like to met you if your in the area. MuleePete |

Hi Fellas,
When I referred to 100% coverage it was regarding custom work on the "regular" coins which aren't regular at all. It is expensive, but certainly possible. I have a custom Morgan shell and insert where the insert coin has been cut in half and reduced in thickness, then glued, shaved and remilled. There is indeed 100% coverage. I know.....overkill probably, but I like coins a LOT! |

The ] would show thicker than the actual faced down coin. The ] could be 20% thicker than that coin. Visually, that is easy to spot from a spectator's point of view. I would suggest using that set for 'in the hands' work only. |

Double J-
This set was made to fool magicians and does. The thickness between the shell and the insert coins is very difficult to discern, even for me. I can assure you there are no problems with this set at ALL. |
