Hey folks.... I'm angling myself as "the awkward magician" and am trying to walk the fine line of using it as a persona, but not have clients view it as unprofessional.
My current site is http://www.PeteGmagic.com, and I am going to retool it soon to focus around the "awkward" magician theme. As such, starting with my about me part of the page, I have been working on this draft of copy: Pete has always been a little awkward. He has also always loved magic. When these two merged at the age of 18, something happened. Audiences applauded. Festival crowds laughed. HARD! Thinking he was onto something, he developed a couple of unique shows, making sure that guests of all ages would be Entertained, Amazed, and have FUN! With an All Star Cast of One, fairs and festivals found his unique comedy and magic a “fresh face in a sea of the same”, and “Like no other show I’ve ever seen.” I ensure that your audience will be engaged and will make your event/festival/party more memorable than my awkwardness any input? |

Awkward is a negative word. On the surface, no event planner wants an "awkward" performer. Not saying it will not work but, rather, you better explain better why your positioning will benefit them. Really expand upon what "awkward" means and what unique benefit will this bring.
Just a thought: could you separate your performance character from the professional they are dealing with? I don't think that any buyer would want to deal with anyone unreliable or awkward. Again, not saying this will not work, but you will need to explain this more. Are you awkward in business dealings? Again, need to explain this. You mention "unique" and "funny" but you need to explain this further and connect it specifically to elements of your performance/persona. What about a less negative word: "quirky" or "whimsical" perhaps? Get the idea? A clear benefits-based explanation is more critical here than with most (including in your about me section). Fail on explaining your positioning effectively and it could mean that your choice may work against you rather than for you. |

His staff referred to him as Mr. Goldthwait. His promo materials were class. No one would have hired him if they thought he was really an insane comedian that may kill an audience member or burn down the venue. So they went the extra mile to distance the "real" Bobcat from the role played on stage. Something worth looking into. |
