I've been wondering what Close has been up to over these years.

Who cares about the Close forum? What does that have to do with this product? L&L Publishing doesn't have anything to do with Michael's website. This is a separate project produced and owned by L&L.

Just a reminder to guys like Andi Peters - this thread is about the L&L Publishing product Michael Close: Devious. It's a great set of DVDs and those of you Close fans will really enjoy the material. I've watched both DVDs a couple of times now and can tell you there is some fantastic material here. If you don't have any intention of buying these, there are hundreds of other threads on this forum you can post to.

If you want some great routines that will make you look good get the Close DVDs. If you want to be a sad sack of sour grapes wallow in APs posts.

Serious question. I have the workers set and he stands behind a table and does table top magic. So there is not much I can use.

Did he overcome this in the new DVD's?

I like his creativity.

But I don't do table top magic.(The venues I perform at don't allow a performer to stand behind a table and use a surface). So I'm wondering if he still stands behind a table and does table top magic.

If so these will not work for me.

Any insight will be helpful.

thanks

I've been watching the first disc this evening.

The majority of stuff (so far at least) he has been using the table top for.

BUT, and here's the thing : like others have said in this thread and the man himself says in the intro to the DVD, the main part of these discs isn't the tricks so much as the theory, the routining, motivating sleights etc. So you are bound to get something out of them.

In my opinion Michael Close is one of the best presenters of magic out there. Does his stuff work for me? Not particularly, because I work different venues to him (there's a big difference between a place like Illusions where people come to specifically see magic being performed, and "everywhere else"). But I still always enjoy and get a lot out of his presentation, especially.

Futureal: Thanks for the review. I'll consider the set now.
(I've been reading "Strong Magic" and then going to DVD's to watch how some of the masters actually apply this theory.)

These DVDs are a masterclass in taking "tricks" and presenting them as "magic".

As has been said previously, even if you don't do any of the tricks presented there is so much to learn from the theory presented alone. I'd recommend watching these with a notebook and pen at your side to glean every nugget of info you can!

I think this dvd-set is great. A dream for card lovers.
Many goodies. I give this 9.7 out 10.
Top notch production, sure.
Lot of useful info and insights is given out!

Thanks Michael for giving me a wonderful magic movie show - lot of fun.
And, I will surely use several of the routines when I do my magic shows.

Just got my DVDs a few days ago. Spent the weekend watching them. Fantastic - it's cliche but a few small tips around doing Faro shuffles in the real world are, by themselves, worth the price of the DVDs; to say nothing of the other great material. Well worth the investment!

The challenge with Close's material, at least for me, is to come up with patter and presentation that is believable for my own personality. Many of his routines patter around being in a certain casino, and with me, that just won't sell. Most folks know I don't do that, so I need to come up with something more credible. But don't get me wrong, his material is still top notch.

Thanks daffydoug!
This is more of a reason for me to get them, I look and act just like I just came out of a casino.(I used to work inside of one doing magic for 2 years and lived the casino life).
And now we have a land based casino downtown New Orleans right near all the venues I work. My challenge would be to get these presentations refined to my style and adapting them to no tables. Not impossible. I still have the "workers" VHS's from the 90's. I never did finish watching them. I will have to go back and watch them.
Need to find a VHS machine...maybe I will read the books.
So much material, so little time...Smile
This sounds like something to put on my wish list.

I saw Mike Close at the SAM Atlanta 2010 Convention and he was great! I take back anything I said about him.(And I told him that!) He has a great sense of humor.
His work is superb. He is way advanced over the "workers" days. He explained why he does what he does, and it made sense. He did not have his new DVD's for sale there, or I would have bought them. I would not necessarily do the tricks, I have enough tricks, but I would study his presentation and methods to apply to the magic I already do. This set is next on my wish list. I would consider him one of the great "thinkers" of today. We are lucky to have him share with the magic community.

thanks

Agreed, Close was dynamic and funny at SAM and you can't go wrong with the DVD's, more of the same.
