So as a couple of you know, I'm working on a bizarre magic/sideshow kind of thing with the theme of "Phobias". I was thinking of doing a smash and grab or Russian roulette effect with knife or nail in bag or cup or something and it made me want to show the clip from youtube http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=oaUXxadeo4c before doing the effect. Obviously I would do a foolproof version... but I had no way of showing it at every event without lugging around a screen big enough or laptop or something, so I thought about buying a pocket projector like this

bestbuy.com

Then I could show clips or even hook up a video camera maybe for showing more detail in a show. What do you think??

I have been researching small projectors...

If you are using video with the sound track you will need other speakers...the speakers on this device are tiny.

Might be fun for parlor but stage I'm afraid it lacks the candle power...

"In a very dark room, we were able to blow up images to about 8 feet in diagonal with the projector about 12 feet away—although we found the optimal size to be a 2-foot image at 3 feet away, depending on ambient light. In some video podcasts, the image quality and motion were amazingly good considering how low the native resolution is on this projector. A downloaded TV show, however, was remarkably grainy."

I knew about the speakers. I'd probably be doing it at a nightclub kind of setting... don't know id I can afford a couple thousand dollar set up...

There's always a price to pay. And if you're going to do it, do it right.

Getting a larger projector is only about twice the cost of the pocket model.

If I can find one for Cheap enough I might.. I just liked the idea of ultra portable.
I just noticed on some sideshow effects it might not show up in a larger darker stage. Blockhead might not get the same effect if your 4 tables back. or needle swallowing or traps. Fire is great, glass walking might work, but not everyone can see your feet. I figure id have a person on the stage video taping and projecting pretty much the whole time to make sure they see everything...

Think of it in the same way you might think of music. You don't want it for every routine. Some things will look better with projection. Some won't.

Pico projectors really aren't at the level you're looking for now. Just check out engadget for reviews on most of them. The bulk of them are for projecting on your bedroom wall or ceiling. There are some very affordable compact projectors that are made by companies like infocus. I would say look along those lines and check ebay for some used older models, sometimes people just unload them vs. paying the price for a new lamp (which can get kind of pricey, another downside of projectors in general). Good luck with it.

Also, if it's going to be the same venue all the time you may want to approach the venue about covering the cost of the equipment, you never know they may be interested in something like that to project sports events or just to use that type of setup for other acts coming through.

Personally I don't like the idea of playing the clip in your live show, it seems anticlimactic to me...

But if this is what you would like to do I would recommend something like this. http://www.pssl.com/Sanyo-PLCXU88-Xga-Mu......rojector

This is small yet very powerful at 3,000 Lumens and priced right. I also like Hitachi projectors and this would be a good source to find them at http://www.trox.com I would call them and ask if they have any demo units they are trying to get rid of. This company sells more projectors in the US than any other.

My "day job" is technical director for an illusion show, and in my past I have been an audio visual installer (@ Troxell Communications) and a technician. I have literally installed hundreds of projectors over the years... If you have any technical questions feel free to PM me, or call you can find my number on my website.

Good luck,
Fitz

P.S. This technical invite is open to anyone, you could say I'm a "trained professional" when it comes to sound, lighting, pyro, fog, confetti, and other technically theatrical things. I have learned a lot in this area of the Café and would love to help anyone that may need it.

Thanks for the help, but why don't you like the idea? I think to show the youtube clip of the spike could be funny, "ANy volenteers" after showing a screw up. or to show the danger of what I'm doing and make it seem like it's more exciting. This isn't foolproof, this is something that could go wrong. On TV it's fake or if its a reality show they aren't going to show something really tragic because if the guy dies on the show it would be bad press. They wouldnt show it, but here its real, not just a trick but something that could go wrong! I think I could use clips to emphasize that... maybe its just me...

Forgive me Kameron, but this has already been done.
I think it is Brian Brushwood's routine where he shows a compilation of the russian roulette fails before performing it himself. It was him or Sperry.
Can't seem to find the video though.

My feeling is that the live action in front of your audience is going to build the drama. The video in my eyes takes the "what if" feeling away.

I guess if the video was of YOU failing, and now you are trying it again "for the first time" that would be a different story. This could be done by the way, in fact Brian Brushwood does a routine where he fails, but I'm not sure about the intro video mentioned above.

Brian is a nice guy and very approachable, if you decide to talk with him about how he has done this routine...

it was me...the idea was given to me by Paul Kozak and I have been doing it for a number of years before my russian roulette routine

Sorry Mr. Sperry...I knew it was one of you just couldn't place it.
Huge fan of your version! (And your lifesaver Saw routine)

In short Kameron- If it has been done and done well, why do it? Try something else. Not the effect, but presentation.

Cool, if Dan is doing it must work, and that means I was wrong, again. That's okay, I'm used to it, after-all I am married. cha cha cha

I didn't realize it was a big thing...hmm. I just thought it might solidify the dangerousness of the effect, not be the presentation. Some people just might think this is all fake and nothing ever goes wrong. I have done the effect and just told people, but I thought it might be stronger showing it.. oh well.
