Robert, there are some out there combining starcle and snowstorm for an even bigger closer to snow storm. It looks very cool.
The new effects are: The Worlds Saddest Trick Ritual Necklace - Not a new trick to magic, this is Dan's version of it TightRope Cheez Wiz Harlan also goes into detail about his ditch bag and how he manages the props he uses. Everything on the DVD is Dan's A show stand-up material. The Lecture portion of the DVD is also something very different then past DVDs of Harlan. You may ask WHY SO and here is the answer, when a creator goes into detail about their effects to just a camera and not to magicians they hold back some, there is no interaction or facial expressions for one to see if everyone is understanding the effect. Very few creators film their lecture to a live magician audiance and then release it to the community. We all know that lectures are much better then watching a DVD explanation of effects to just a camera in a studio. This is also why this set is two DVD's there is just so much information we could not do it all on one DVD. I just hope everyone understands this is live footage throughout both DVD's, no studio, nor studio audience. Dan wanted this DVD to be for magicians by magicians and the reviews we are getting back from those who have sampled the DVD'S has been very much what Dan said they would be. That is "wow its like being at a lecture that I don't have to take notes". How many times have you been to a lecture and thought, if I only had a camera I could recall everything that was said. Well that is this project in a nut shell. Now with that said, nothing can replace a live lecture we know that, but this project attempts to bring more to the viewer then just here is the trick and this is how its done. I know everyone even if you do some of Dan's classics now will find what is on these DVD's very beneficial. Also please keep in mind this is Dan's stand up show. The very same show he does around the world for stand up venues, just getting to see how he structure's a show from the warm up to the closer will help many based on the questions I see popping up here on the Café about show layout and structure. I hope this helps clear some of the questions up. Floyd

Just chiming in real quick to say how thrilled I am with the job Robert has done getting these DVDs produced. There's been a little talk about them containing some material that has already appeared elsewhere... and they do have a few classics, but even the classics contain something special.
For example, one of may favorite (and oldest) routines, "Hold It, Buster!", appears here with my complete script (every joke and move) for the first time. "Crazy-8" is included WITH the necessary gimmick AND instructions on how to do it with a borrowed and signed dollar bill... just like you may have seen on TV... AND this is the first time it has been released with video instructions. The same thing goes for "My Word," which has never been on video before. Years ago, I released an early version of it called "37 Across," but have since improved it greatly... new anagram, better letter progression, and I've provided the artwork for the gimmicked cover right on this DVD. Floyd was pretty thorough covering all of the new stuff, but he forgot to mention my opening warm-up routine... which has never been seen (or taught) in it's entirety on any release for magicians. In fact, the only classic on this DVD that has remained essentially unchanged is "Starcle," but you can't have a video of my best stand-up material without including it. It's my best. And, don't forget that there is an in-depth interview section where I answer questions that are sure to help all magicians who want to grow in our art. So, if you already own a couple of these routines in another form (or even if you happen to own everything I've ever done), you will still be entertained, amused, and learn some new stuff. Enjoy! --Dan Harlan |

I enjoyed watching the performance and although I know "Hold It Buster" & "Crazy Cash/Crazy Eight" have been around awhile, this was the 1st time I've ever seen them. Really clever!
The explanations DVD was very good but because of the actual misdirection & subtleties in the effects, I had to pop DVD #1 back in to see where Dan fooled me so badly because those points in the trick's explanation were not rehashed. I LOVE the 'anti-climax' right before the end of Cheez Whiz. Dan, that is some ingenious 'patter' (I'm talking about the "journey" patter for those of you who own this). What an odd feeling I had in my mind as you performed this phase. Anyway, since no one has been leaving any feedback, I thought that I'd drop in my 2 cents. Overall, I'm very happy I bought this. |

Hey Café,
I have also received this DVD. I want to mention that Robert Haas did a great job in getting the pre-orders out quickly, I received mine just days after the release date! I agree with Marqus, I have never had the priveledge of seeing Mr. Harlan perform his material, it was great to see his stage/parlor set. "Crazy 8/Crazy Cash" is absolutely brilliant! Imagine a torn & restored mis-made bill that uses only "one" bill, no bill switch, no t*****tip!!! Oh, and did I mention, they sign the bill and you clearly show the signature as you tear up the bill? The absolute nail in the coffin on it though, is that upon restoration, the outide edges of the mis-made bill are rough, torn edges, just as the bill would be if you actually tore it into four pieces and put it back together mis-made. "Hold It Buster" is a great stage monte that does not feel like a monte. A great storyline about his dad and doing chores, really good presentation. For you mentalists and magicians who like mentalism, "My Word" is a super clean book test without the boring and complicated parts of a book test. There is no fishing or fumbling, and it IS foolproof and idiot proof. "Cheese Wiz" is a first class trip into the ridiculous. This is such an original and fun routine, any audience will laugh their as**s off! I do have one comment that speaks to what Marqus said. I found that the explanation DVD could have been more in-depth and clearer at points. There were several things that I did not feel were covered properly. By watching a few times and looking at the performance DVD, all is revealed, but since it's basically a taping of a lecture, there were times when I think it would have been good to add some studio explanation footage in to help make things clearer. I think if you are going to promote it as having "Comprehensive Explanations", with "Every routine in the show is fully explained in detail.", then you should make sure to be detailed and comprehensive. That being said, I think this is a gem, with some great routines, some of which I will be trying out myself. Thanks for sharing Dan and thanks to Robert and Floyd for putting this out to the magic community. |
