I use the method outlined by Bill Severn in his "Best Magic".
It does use the gimmicked silk, but the other two are examinable/usable for other effects. Instead of a changing/double wall bag it utilizes a double pocket 'folder'. Works like a charm, very visual.

"Best Magic" by Bill Severn was one the early magic books I owned. It is still loaded with good stuff many magicians and audiences have never seen.

One of the things I like about 20th Century Silks is the variety of audiences and routines possible with them using patter and colors specific for the occasion. Scheme!
I'm more likely to do a mature adult's birthday party than a child's. It's fun with a 20th Century Silk Set that has black end silks and a "Happy Birthday" Silk. ---- Today we are gathered here for a black day in history. (Tie the black silks together) John is on his voyage "over the hill". (Pull out a "Happy Birthday" Silk) With poker faces we tell him "Happy Birthday" and bring him a gift. The gift he really wants is to make the birthday to vanish. Fortunately I am a magician and I can help. Just by saying "Presto!" (which I have noticed is getting slower and slower over the years for me), the birthday vanishes. (Vanish the "Happy Birthday" Silk.) However, even in the blackest and darkest days there is nothing like a party celebrating those we love being here and continuing to bring joy to our lives. We do have something to celebrate! (Pull the two black silks apart to show the "Happy Birthday" silk tied in between.) Happy Birthday John! Of course there are many others too. Change colors and patter and away you go with a whole new routine. Bob Sanders Magic By Sander |

My personal favorite, and in my opinion, most magical-looking 20th Century Silk trick is published in Albenice's Reel Magic.....and it's a hidden gem in the Art of Magic!!
It's the "Visible 40th Century Silks" trick detailed in Chapter 18. My friend Jack Bridwell used to invite me onstage at the Dealer's Showroom at Abbott's get-together to demo this, as it was a crowd favorite and goot ooooohh's and ahhhhhh's. Even though it's my favorite, it may not be optimal to use for each and every performance, depending on performing circumstances. Bob Sanders knows about this as we were going to discuss my method in Colon but Bob was so darned busy running all over town that we just didn't have time...besides .....Bob stayed at a different Hotel this year.... I do endorse Bob's 20th Century Silk Set...QUALITY stuff...and highly recommended...I will be performing it as part of my silk repertoire Tuesday night at a show I'm doing in Missouri. My Bob Sanders 20th Century Silk set came with Red and Blue silks.......just PERFECT for this upcoming election right? |

I used to do Sympathetic Silks and go directly into 20th Century. My 18" Rice silks were wonderful! I used a MAK Goblet, which was crystal, and PURE class! It was one of my most successful silk routines. Not sure where I am headed, now that I lost all that.
That foreclosure opened my eyes. Now, I am slowly recovering on a DRASTICALLY reduced budget, now that I'm retired on a V.A. pension. My magic has changed. Less props. I'm getting more into Mentalism and The Bizarre. Still, if you do silks, get the Rice Encyclopedias if you can. You will learn more about silk magic than you ever knew! Doug |

Doug,
I agree! There is no substitute for the Rice Silk Encyclopedias. They will save you a fortune in DVDs and give options that DVDs don't. Bob |

Yeah, Bob. I'm trying to recover those. I had the 4-volume set. It was lost in that *&^%ing, cursed foreclosure! Now I can only find volume 3 (At Rice's site). The rest you will pay a fortune for on eBay!

A set just sold yesterday for $59. It might have gone higher but that is what it ended at.
You have to keep looking. Richard

Dougini:
There is also a CD-Rom version of all 4 volumes for sale on E-Bay for $39 right now. It's not the best solution, understand, but it at least gives you all of the info. I might go buy one myself!

Be careful of the CD-ROM my understanding is that they were liquidated at $10/set because the OCR did not work well with them. The originals were hand-lettered. That doesn't work well with OCR software to copy them. The results were poor.
Years ago Rice told me there would never be a true Vol. 4 since the hand-lettering was no longer available to him. He did not do Vol. 4! (Note that title is even different although they started with the next page number.) Go with the printed originals. Bob |

The Rice's Encyclopedia of Silk Magic is one of my most precious sets of Magic Books in my collection.
They're a true wealth of information regarding just about anything to do with silk magic....the Francis Martineau Illustrations are second to none, and the depth and variety of routines in the books are terrific. I think they're one of the anchors in a Magician's Working Reference Library.....just my 2 cents worth. |

In answer to a question:
YES! There are 24" sets of 20th Century Silks. They are very impressive, No doubt! However, size matters and you should be at least 6 feet tall. Bob |

I remember reading in GENII many years ago (1960's) a review of a magician's act where he tied two silks together--then went to his prop box on a table to get a magic wand and made the sw***h under the pretext of looking for the magic wand. The reviewer initially thought that that was a pretty lame way to do the routine. But... the reviewer said he changed his mind when he saw the reaction of the audience. They were still amazed at the end of the trick when the vanished silk appeared between the two he had tied together--and the audience expressed their amazement and delight by their applause.

If it doesn't fool and entertain people, I just wasted 51 years! And I just got 16 new bookings for February!
