It's a great clip. Max has such presence, I think he could make peeling a Banana entertaining and I don’t think that it is just because of his image. I have always wondered if he had ever thought of changing his image and which way he would go.
You might say reality is the result of complex negotiations between the observer and the observed. But that is simply a point of view.
Many Thanks Garrad |

Yes, Max has the ability to make a GREAT presentation from what we might describe as a simple effect. I think there is a lesson to be learnt here.

Very cool! If there were ever a "Best Persona in Mentalism" list, Mr. Maven would have to be in the #1 slot.

Thanks Oral. That clip showed Max really making his persona work for him.
I saw the effect marketed some time ago. I don't recall where. I don't think I'd buy it because it's not a match for the persona I'm working on developing. (It strikes me as more mental magic than mentalism.) Nevertheless, can anyone name the effect?

It's basically a take on Pegasus' Page. You can find a similar version in Osterlind's DVDs. I believe Docc Hilford also does a version on his DVDs.

Yes it is an adaptation of Arthur Emerson's "Pegasus Page" which was inspired by Corinda's “Zarkamorta II (The Ceremony of Reincarnation)" which is found in 13 Steps -- both of which are but two in a long line of what, for lack of a better description I have dubbed “resurrected page” book tests in which a page is removed(or caused to vanish) from a book, possibly destroyed, and reappears back in the book or elsewhere.
These tests are usually presented in a “story-telling” style as seen in the video and their origin is most frequently traced to Annemann’s “Whim of Tituba” which can be found in his Jinx No. 67 of November 18, 1939 and again in Practical Mental Effects (1944); however, insofar as I have been able to ascertain, Herbert Milton's “A Page of Mystery” described in Vol. 6 of Percy Naldrett's Collected Magic Series published in October 1925, is actually the first published example of such an effect, predating Annemann's "Tituba" by some 14 years. The theme was picked up by Sid Fleischman in “The Trick Without A Name” which is found in J.G. Thompson, Jr.’s My Best published in 1945 and again in 1953, writing as Carl March, in Magic Made Easy. After the versions by Corinda and Emerson, it reappears in 1972 as “Ashes to Ashes” by E. Raymond Carlisle, the original “resident medium” at Hollywood’s famed Magic Castle, “The Sough of Horses’ Wings” by the late German mentalist Ted Lesley in his book Paramiracles (published in Germany in 1992 and in the US in 1994), by Jim Magus as “Never Trust A Demon” in his book Arcana of Bizarre Magick (also 1994), in 1995 by Docc Hilford with his “Brother Of All Book Tests” (and later version titled “The Wizard’s Manual”) and by England’s Roy Johnson as “To Hell And Back,” by Mark Edward, another of the Magic Castle’s resident “mediums” as “The Roswell Effect” in the 1997-98 hardcover expanded edition of his earlier softcover book Restless Plots and finally by Italy's Tony as “The Page of the Book Act” in his book My Way to Mentalism (2000). There will no doubt be even more versions and adaptations created and published in the years ahead and this style of test is the subject of an entire chapter in the reference work on forcing books and book tests that I am compiling and hope to publish late next year. Although it does not involve a page which is destroyed and later “resurrected,” the “Hateful Page” book test created by the UK’s Iain Dunford in 2007 is similar in that it does use a “torn out” page but with a new and novel twist that offers rare comedic opportunities as well. If anyone is aware of any other takes on this classic theme that my research has not yet uncovered, please let me know.
