I wish everyone the best with this issue. It is really a shame that some may have to replace their unit. I had been concerned for a long time but when I saw this thread and read about the February deadline it scared me. I feel very fortunate to still have a working wireless.

All good comments in this thread. As Dan well stated, the bottom line is that regardless of the motivation, the FCC has the authority to make such rulings with impunity. This ruling affects a huge portion of the entertainment industry in the U.S. Although this has not happened overnight (in sound design circles, we've heard about this eventuality for a couple of years), having extra "time" to convert doesn't take the sting out of it much. There are many organizations, schools, individual performers, and small businesses on which this places a huge financial burden. If you only own/use a couple of wireless mics, consider yourself lucky. In theatrical production (especially musicals), it's common to have 12-16 (or more) wireless mics in a show! Also, there is no guarantee that other frequency bands won't fall to the same fate in the future. The radio spectrum is limited, and while there are technologies to more efficiently use the space, the bandwidth is VERY valuable and will most often go to the highest bidder!
So that I'm not accused of just being a "Donnie Downer", some good news: As of January 15th, 2010, you are NOT longer required to have a license to operate wireless mics in the most popular bands below 700MHz. A few types of operators are eligible to become licensed for particular frequencies, which in theory gives them a bit of priority in their use (in the case of an interference dispute, unlicensed users have the greater burden of non-interference), but this is less common for general use. The clearest, up-to-date authoritative source I've found is: http://www.fcc.gov/cgb/wirelessmicrophones/FAQs.html (see FAQ #8 for the statement on unlicensed operation). |

An update: as of today, I've never gotten a response from PASO, or even an acknowledgment of my inquiry. Their silence speaks volumes, as they say. Skip Way had said that he was hoping to get some information about this issue from PASO, but apparently that never happened, either. The PASO ProCast was and is a great PA system. Too bad the company can't be bothered to deal with the problem or its paying customers. SETH

A lot of good information here. And yes, contact the manufacture, the good ones will make their products good or give decent prices in replacement systems.
Remember this is only for wireless TRANSMITTER systems.

Mics, in-ear monitors, music remotes, and so on, all use the same transmit/receive principle. It's the frequency that is of concern --- anything between 698MHz and 806MHz (this is what the FCC is calling the 700MHz band). Application (ie., mic, remote, and so on) is irrelevant. I hope this helps.

As a matter of fact, Joe Lefler had called and left a message for me to call him regarding this. I got busy and totally forgot to call him back. I'll do so first thing Monday - My schedule tomorrow and Sunday doesn't have a second to spare. Sorry, guys! One track mind and all...

If I understand correctly, any PA system with a corded mike is not affected, since it doesn't use any radio frequencies at all. So, if I ran my now non-compliant wireless PASO system with a corded mike, I think I'd still be able to use it that way. SETH

There has not much talk about the ban on certain wireless systems lately. Just wondered if this did happen or not and how many of you were on the list and have to buy new systems?
Thanks and have a nice day, Walking Bob in Iowa |

Hi, Walking Bob:
Yes, the ban most definitely happened. I just ordered 12 new wireless systems, and my credit card promptly turned into molten goo. Fortunately, I have an electronics background, so I'm rewiring the mics themselves for the new transmitter packs. That saves some money, but still, ouch, ouch, ouch. -Ken |

I've got a new system on order. Luckily, multichannel systems are available at a nice price.
