I'm heading to the USA in July, and provided the Aussie dollar keeps it's strength, I'd like to buy myself an electric guitar. Can anyone recommend a good store in either the LA or Vegas area that's not too expensive and has a large range? At the moment I'm thinking of getting an Epiphone Les Paul Standard Plus, but if anyone has any suggestions on other units around the $400-$500, I'm keen to hear any suggestions. Cheers!

What I'd do is order it from a reputable company like Elderly and have it sent to where I'm going.
Most people I know (not all) either lean towards Gibson or towards Fender, but not both. If you want a Gibson, that's certainly a good choice. If you don't already play, and don't really prefer Gibson from experience but just based on looks, then by all means you need to go to a music store and try them out. My last purchase of an electric was a bottom of the line Squire Tele for €159, including shipping. I'm happy with it. It didn't need any set-up whatsoever other than heavier strings. Then again, mine is just for when I'm in the mood to play something other than acoustic music My late 70s strat...well, the workmanship was poorer than this cheap guitar, and I tweaked the set-up on and off until I sold it in the mid 90s. Those robots are making awfully fine guitars these days. |

I have an Epiphone classic that has been my best friend for years, and I am pretty happy for what I payed way back then.

I have the Epi LP Classic as well and it's been a good guitar! I also have the Epi Dot slightly hot rodded and it's VERY nice!

If you take a walk down the Sunset strip in Hollywood, you'll run into a plethora of guitar shops: Guitar Center, Voltage, Neely Custom Guitars, Sam Ash, etc. And there are even more on the side streets.
However, if you decide you want a acoustic guitar, then you'll want to check out McCabe's Guitar Shop in Santa Monica. |

A lot of times I have longed to get my hands on a really high end classical, like the one Chris Parkening plays, (That tone is to die for, and there is NO WAY, as good as he is, that that tone can be all his touch. Just no way. The guitar is half the secret. Just gotta be.)
Anyway, I don't have a few grand lying around, and my job went to Mexico, so I guess I'll just be content with my Epi, for now. A man's gotta eat, after all. But I can dream, can't I?
