There is no such thing as an ugly Cup… but if there were, they most certainly would be the Garcia and El Duco Cups without question.

Thanks DC, I'll have to agree with the majority then and place em in the not so pretty category!

I had a set of El Duco's, my first "good" set. It was 5 minutes after getting home with them that I found out they were pretty poorly designed. I was friend with Frank and talked C&B a lot, he never mentioned those cups... I thought maybe Bill had the inside info on their manufacture.

Talk about a terrible stack... Ugh. These were the first set of 'real' cups that I ever bought. I think I got them from Hank Lee in 1998 or '99. Never used them once.

Best,

Doug

That makes my 20 year old set of Morrisseys seem workable. That stack is HORRIBLE.

Speaking of lousy cups, the "Great Scot" leather cups are right up there too.

Never seen the Great Scot's in person although I would always liked the look of the leather balls he sold with them...

Christer Gustavsson (El Duco) was a very nice man. He passed away about a year and a half ago. The idea of his cup design was to give us a cup that was so narrow at the top (when inverted on a table) that a load ball on top of the cup would look too large to fit into the cup itself. However, he did not think of how the cups would stack.

The design could be saved by redesigning the shoulder and mouth of the cups. It wouldn't be easy, though.

The "Garcia" cups are a thing unto themselves. They look like the handles off a bathroom sink.

Maybe these are the cups Lee needs to take into third world countries. NOBODY would steal them!

The fellow who was selling these got the idea somewhere that they would be more historically correct for Renaissance Festival work than metal cups. So he had a company in Pakistan make them for him. The most expensive part were the balls. And these were horrible! He had them made of leather covered marbles or something similar. There was nothing historically correct about them. The real insult was that you could go to any major train station in Germany, as well as most toy stores, and buy the same leather cups for about a Euro per cup.

They had no saddle. Clearly the guy knew zip about the cups and balls. He even had the date of publication of Hocus Pocus, Junior wrong in his first ads on eBay.

I have an Eric Muller Hi-Ball Chop Cup, I can't work out if that belongs in this thread or I really like it because of its... "primitive charm." It was certainly hit with the ugly stick shortly after being made and the gaffing isn't exactly precision...

There is a burl chop cup in the museum that is highly warped. I got it from the big auction site. The seller did mention that it was warped, so I really have no complaint about that part. However, it is an excellent object lesson to woodturners about making sure the wood they turn has dried out and/or seasoned properly.
