Dear Aldo,
Which of your dvds would you suggest for beginner to intermediate card sleights? Thank you in advance for your answer. Barney Outside of a dog, a book is man's best friend. Inside of a dog it's too dark to read. Groucho Marx

I have to say that NONE of my DVDS contain very difficult stuff. At the most there is a double undercut, an Elmsley Count, a double lift and a card control or the like (no passes, no palming, etc). But for beginners I would suggest the following: SUBTLE CARD MAGIC, EASY CARD EFFECTS, IMPROMPTU JOURNEY, SELF-WORKING PACKET TRICKS, FAST-PACED CARDS and LET'S GO!, CARD CARNIVAL by Rachel contains a great variety of easy to do card routines and very strong; however, I repeat, if you already mastered the moves I mentioned above, basically you can perform all the tricks in every DVD.

I also strongly recomend Fireworks which is very underated IMHO. One on the best trick you can make for large assembly involving all the public. A must see !

I can say that as someone who was definitely a beginner (still am in many respects), as Aldo states, Self-Working Packet Tricks, Easy Card Effects and Let's Go are very good. But frankly, any or all of the packet trick DVD's would be great ones to start with. I was easily able to get 2-3 tricks mastered right away every time I went thru a new DVD of packet tricks. I have been going thru each DVD again and I'm amazed how many more I can do now. Also, Aldo never assumes you can do thins, he shows you how to do the basic sleights, so no matter what DVD you get, you will be shown all you need. Nothing is left to guesswork. For me, that was crucial to my early success and enjoyment. Don't overlook some other fun ones like Ultimate Faulty Follower (fun to do, I have had lots of laughs with this already) or Tested Ten Card Poker Deal. |

Thanks for noticing that....yes....in every DVD I explain everything, like you said I never assume that the onlookers know what I am doing. I want to teach everything and I assume that I am always talking to beginners, so if a trick requires an Elmsley Count I explain it, if a trick requires a Charlie Shuffle I explain it and so forth. I remember that there is nothing more frustating than to read a book or watch a DVD and being told, "Do a Mirage Count" and nobody explains it....So I try my best to have every DVD complete....

Aldo-
It really helps people like me to continually reinforce the basics versus taking them for granted. So thanks for being very consistent with that idea on what you produce and sell. I practiced the Elmsley Count for weeks just like you said in one of your DVDs. "Just practice it while sitting in front of the TV and I'm sure you will be able to do it..." I think were your words. I did, and it went from a clumsy pawing of cards to something passable, and eventually pretty darn good! But I still practice quite a bit because I can hear those words very clearly..."You do an Elmsley Count..." |

Elmsley Count is definetely my favorite move....if only Elmsley had a cent for every time a magician did this count!!!!!!! Once mastered, you will have in your possession a powerful weapon that will allow you to perform miracles....

Hello Aldo,
I learned the dealer's grip Elmsey count from your description of the move in a Gemini Archives on the Stevens Magic Emporium. Of all the DVDs and books that I've came across describing the count, I think that particuliar write up is the most clear and helpful one. Thank you! Bosco |

Thanks, the RIGHT grip for the Elmsley Count is the most important thing for a good performance of the count. It is not difficult at all and, of course, if you start with the right handling, you do not need any adjustment and the count 'flows'...

Can you tell us about the new effect, Spumoni?

Spumoni, a very famous Italian dessert, is an idea that I had for years, but not yet perfected. I wanted to create a trick that had the flavour of Italian sun and traditions....I have no idea if I'll ever be able to come up with something satisfactory....
