Hey,
Here's a wand that I made and use: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=g6BJ_fioJg0 I've seen some light up wands before but they couldn't be handed to a volunteer. Also with a little extra riggery you can have it light up when you place it under your arm for a bit of Trevor Lewis type shtick. I also do a bit were I place it lit on a table and when someone picks it up it goes off. I also made one that lights up blue. I do the red one as a running gag and swap the blue one in the last time. I'm thinking of making one that can light up either red or blue. George Posted: Feb 12, 2010 7:01am Ha, weird, no responses here but 1 pm and 1 email asking if I was selling them. Well, I've only got 2 of them... I suppose I could make a batch if there was enough interest but seemingly from this thread, there ain't. I really just wanted to show you this little homemade gizmo and find out what you thought of it. I suppose I should include some show footage so you can see the response it gets. G |

I tried to see the video a couple of times and it did not work.

I like it George. Your finger movement is a little distracting.

I thought that too, watching the video back. Far too big hand movements.
It works a lot better if you grip the wand between thumb and forefinger and tilt it back and forward slightly to control the light. I hadn't realised I had got out of the habit of doing that 'til I saw the video. |

It's a good focal point for D'Lites. I like the idea of being able to work a helper into the D'Lite act in this way. Maybe try "splitting the wand in two" and then having a helper on each side of you to work with. Can you do Flip Stick moves with the wand?

Yes, you can Flipstick it. The base is also square so it's easy to do the paddle move with them if needs be.
To be honest, I think there's so much you can do with the light that I haven't felt the need to do either. I have another idea for a pair. Both of them are red but go blue when you hold them. That way the child has a red one and you have a blue one. You complain that you want the red one and swap the wands then they both change colour and you're back where you started. This would actually be a more positive volunteer bit as it looks like the kid is playing tricks on you rather than you handing them a wand that goes out. |

Hi George
I have a routine I could use something like that. If you did make some up I'd be interested. Mark |

You can "catch the fairy" with a handkerchief, using the wand and some Zombie moves. Every time you go to grab the fairy, the light goes off and the fairy is gone, the handkerchief is empty. Do this early in the routine, then put the handkerchief away without showing the wand. Later on, make the wand appear and start in on the wand bits. As long as they don't connect the wand with the fairy under the handkerchief, you can make it do double duty.

Cheers Mark, that's 3!
Spellbinder, you sure want me to get a lot out of it! Really neat idea, I'd be more inclined to build a gimmick especially to do that. The wand doesn't take up that much space and the parts are quite cheap so it would make more sense to build something that actually is made to do that. |

Nice job George. How about the possibility of using it as a child helper selector? Walk into the audience waving it over the kids heads, it lights up over a child's head and they get to come up and help???

That's a great idea, Tommy. I may well give that a try today.

Thanks for the interest. I've all the ingredients to make a few of these now and have made up 10 over the weekend. I'll bung a page up on my website tomorrow if anyone wants to grab one.
I also checked international postage and it's about £2. I want to sell them for a reasonable price for buyers and for me (they do take a wee while to make but I have been finding it quite therapautic) so I'll keep the price under £20. It'll be fun to see others using the wand. there's lots of ways you can go with these things and they allow for a lot of originality from performers. George P.S. I packed one up complete with fairy for you, captain, although I think I stabbed her with a fork when I was making the airholes... |
