Is there a guess in there, Santa?
I'll end the suspense. Calgary's official population was 1,065,455 in April 2009. The Metro Calgary region is said to be right around 1.25 million. It pretty much doubled in size in the last 15 years or so.

Hmm - I wonder what "most livable " means.
For a start the house prices in Sydney are now I believe 8 * the average annual salary of folk - so that's a big mortgage. Perth's pretty expensive for housing as well now with the mining boom. Australia is a fab place though and I would live there in a shot - if I could afford it !!!! The only slight misgiving I have on Perth is how far away from everything you are and how it feels like a thin veneer of civilisation on a lot of sand. The wife and I went into Perth City Centre for a drink one Saturday night a few years back and I swear we felt like we were the only ones there- in the city not the bar !!! |

The worlds best cities of the future are the ones the army are building around the world for the elite. Which are giant exclusive resorts that one needs a pass to enter. At the centre of them will be a big owl.

I'm happy where I'm at, food is not that great. If I had my way, I'd be back in New Orleans.
Peace and Godspeed.

"Australia isn't very livable if you're of Indian descent. Nor if your gay. Nor if... "
Davit, Indians being attacked in Australia has been big news here, and in India, but the idea that the attacks are race based is a media beatup - a law and order problem - not racism. The Indian media jumps up and down about every incident where an Indian is the victim - one recent attack created a huge media frenzy when an Indian guy was burnt badly when assailants apparently tried to burn him to death in his car - more restrained reporting when it turned out he'd accidentally burnt himself while torching his car for insurance fraud - likewise for a couple who were murdered when it turned out they were killed by a countryman of theirs, not an Australian, over financial disagreements. As for gays, homosexuality is decriminalised in all of Australia and other than marriage (which is not seen as necessary by all gays) we are treated much like anyone else. We are still at some times mistreated by some in the community, something I imagine is true for just about every member of every community. We have openly gay judges, politicians, celebrities etc. Australia is an extremely liveable place for gays. Actually a politician who became a media sensation a decade ago for espousing intolerance for amongst others, foreigners, our indigenous people and gays, has just announced she is moving to England because she sees no hope for Australia. Our loss is our gain. |

In San Francisco an Indian guy named Mohamed was bunt badly when Australian
assailants apparently tried to bum him to death in his car. When asked what they were doing there they said, well we didn’t come here for the weather.

Also...
Really happy that I've lived in three of those cities mentioned. Adelaide wasnt what I'd call a great place to live, but I wasnt there for so long. Perth was one of the best places to live. Work (esp theatre type) was a bit more difficult to find though. In terms of its nightlife it is getting better Im told. As for gays, asians, blind albinos etc. Australian media latches onto stories and can make political scandals out of pretty much anything. Take it easy! Ozland is a great place; perfect pink-holiday destination (Sydney Pride anyone?) Asians have been a sizeable percentage of the population for almost as long as the British and as for blind albinos... well the views ae great and the sun shines for nine months of the year. What more do you want!?! |
