Maybe someone has tried this before-

I have a show approaching where I need to shoot a single large ball of fire into the air. It needs to look considerably different than a flashpot, so I was thinking it would be simple enough to build a larger version of a hand-held flash paper gun. I tried it with various lengths and widths of tubing, as well as different ways to load the paper (loosely crumpled, stuffed in tight, etc.) and so far, I have only succeeded in shooting the fire about 1 foot above the tube. Is there something that I'm not doing? If someone can tell me how to shoot the fireball, say, 6 feet up, that would be much appreciated!

Flash Cotton compacted in the base and a Flash Paper ball on top should give you more height. The Flash Cotton is a bit more "explosive" when it ignites and this should give you a better launch.

This sounds dangerous, Phil, and it may also be illegal ... even to test it. Please contact your fire marshall, and I'm sure he/she can advise. Laws vary in diffeent regions.

These devices are built to produce your desire effect, however I agree with Dan, be safe and check with your authority having jurisdiction (AHJ) about the legalities and safety of this effect.

For more information about performing with fire you can also visit this website

I believe this effect would also fall under the NFPA 1126 codes, you can find that information here

I hope this helps,
I have a daily web show all about magic at
