You know I have heard more than one businessman who works with Chinese companies call China a "new frontier." They mean this as a comparison to the old American west where fortunes were up for grabs and the law was usually easily bought. We aren't talking about Taiwan here, we mean the provinces and backwater towns where the factories are all run and massive amounts of money change hands.
It would be fascinating to get an idea of how the cheaters and cons operate in China. Despite the military police and general totalitarian atmosphere you know they must have a culture of cons all their own. |

I think craps came from England or rather sprang or developed from a game called Banco which gives us the term Bunco men.

I agree with Mr. Z (and Forte) that "crossroaders" traditionally refers to traveling casino cheats and "road hustlers" traditionally refers to traveling teams of private cheats.
More specifically, road hustlers frequently started the games they played in. They would show up at a stag party, fraternal organization's outing, or conference and create a game where none existed before. It wasn't always this way of course, but often it was. I have no problem with telling someone that both crossroaders and road hustlers are essentially extinct. Just because there are one or two (or a dozen) guys out there still doing business doesn't change the fact that the breed is virtually completely dead. Look, people still make wagon wheels too, but anyone claiming that the wagon is an extinct form of daily travel would be basically correct, regardless of a handful of Amish families preventing the claim from being absolutely correct. Yes, there are guys out there like Doc, that still make money on the road. I can name another 3 or 4 guys just like him. That doesn't change the fact that the road hustler is basically an outdated model, and for all intents and purposes, when compared to their former numbers from the 50s - 80s, extinct. Jason

ahh I love Baudelaire. I do see what Jason is saying. The breed as we know it is gone but likely also to have evolved. Check your inbox for no shortage of modern con games that "get the money." |

Perhaps but I was reading about Banco in a book on fraud and con men etc. It was a dice game in England which was played like craps, with a layout, and then went to the USA where it was popular, where some played it with cards instead of dice because the hustlers could rig the game with cards more easily. They took Oscar Wild for a fortune with it.
