Fellow Magicians,
I've been into the online marketing world for a few years now, and am coming back to my roots in magic. I have helped brick-and-mortar businesses get online and start seeing trackable income. If anyone has questions regarding using Google Analytics, AdWords, Bing or Yahoo's marketing platforms, setting up a website, or anything in between, please don't hesitate to ask! |

Hello sir, it will be good to have another knowledgeable guy to talk with. Mike Clay is the "big dog" around here as far as I'm concerned.
Would love to talk with you about some stuff. Do you prefer PM's? |

What is the single (online) best resource for advertising a magic business?
GigMasters? We've created a very nice service that is positioning magicians ad listings right alongside GigMaster results in search engines . . . we want to know who else to shoot for! Thanks.
TheMagicianGuide.com - National Magician Directory.

MagicianGuide,
You've got a terrible website, I hope you're not spending too much on SEO. Your problem is that you don't have any real info on your site! I clicked on a dozen states and couldn't find any magicians! Where's the value in that? In fact, I just got lost in your "network" for a few minutes and couldn't really find anything! Regarding the best way to advertise online, I think the best thing someone can do is get their own website and do some basic SEO. After that, maybe some Adwords or social media campaigning would be best. Gigmasters and sites like your only exist because we list on them! Listing on directories like your can be beneficial, but we often lose control over how our business information is displayed and marketed. In addition, I think magicians end up over-paying for these sites sometimes. Start by fixing your page. It's way too busy right now, tone it down, get some real information on there, get some basic listings, then you can invest in SEO and go after the "big guys" like gigmasters! Best wishes, Kevin |

"Regarding the best way to advertise online, I think the best thing someone can do is get their own website and do some basic SEO. After that, maybe some Adwords or
social media campaigning would be best." I respectfully disagree. IMO both SEO and Social Media represent long term approaches. If you want traffic NOW to your website you can do so by using Google Adwords. And you can spend as much or as little as you want to make this happen. The first thing you should do is think long and hard about the keywords and keyword phrases that you intend to base your entire website and internet marketing outreach around. If you try to be number #1 in the Search Engines for "magician" you are facing a very long and depressing future. I have a very detailed, in-depth course on the topic of internet marketing for magicians - including SEO, website development/copywriting, and Adwords. If you're interested contact me directly. This is something I use and it's something I teach and have taught across the US and even overseas for several years. And I feel pretty comfortable stating I have both hands-on expertise as well as in-depth knowledge as I spent 15 years at Microsoft running technical projects and launching websites for MSN and other properties in their consumer division. --Jack Turk

If you want traffic NOW to your website you can do so As always, I am prepared to be persuaded otherwise, but from talking to a lot of people, Ad Words do NOT appear to bring in much business. I'd love to hear from folks on this forum that get a lot of business from AdWords. And no BS, please. And I would love to hear from folks how much they are all spending. I can't tell you how many magicians have told me they are spending $200 -$300 a month on AdWords with very little results. And good SEO work can get rapid results in the search engines so I disagree it is a long-term approach. It is interesting how often I find myself respectfully disagreeing with Jack! It is good there is room for lots of different approaches and opinions! Best, James |

Adwords isn't about how many clicks you get, but how many qualified leads you receive. Some acts try to be everything to everyone, you can see that on sites like Gigmasters, when an act lists under categories they do not belong. |

Tom,
The conversation is open to everyone! I agree that some magicians go too generic with their adWords and SEO. I agree with Jack on that point. But still, I haven't heard from ANY magicians who can honestly say they get much work from adWords. And that includes me! And I am about as savvy as it gets when it comes to online stuff. James,
I'm surprised to hear that. Anyway, personally I think organic results is the way to go. I think it's even better than Adwords (in the long term). Right now I get the majority of my "internet" bookings from organic internet results. Second, from referrals. Third, from Adwords. I spend less than $100/month on adwords, so it's a great deal from me. One factor could be the market. I think southern California and Texas (for example) are bigger markets, much more competition. By the way James, I don't get near the number of bookings you do, so a "good" return on adwords for me is probably not that good for you! I don't get a ton of bookings from Adwords, but I spend less than $100/month and I book several shows from it, so it's worth it for me several times over. Jack.... I still think having a good website and doing some simple SEO is a better foundation than doing Adwords. You can drive thousands of people to your site by advertising at local shows. This is something people forget way too often. The advertising you do at local shows is MUCH cheaper, MUCH more targeted, AND MUCH more effective than trying to get those same people (or other people in your market) to visit your site via adwords. I'd take a good site with some basic seo, over adwords anytime. I think adwords is wonderful, I use it (not well, but I use it!) and have gotten results. I wasn't saying it wasn't important, but you've got to have a good website first. If your website doesn't convert people when they come, then even adwords can't save you! (the whole reason I mentioned the good site was in response to Mick's post about TheMagicianGuide. In my opinion, he has a terrible website with no real content, but he's asking about how to compete SEO-wise with the big guys!) Also, I hope nobody here is trying to get to number one on the search term "magician." As I think Tom was mentioning in his post above, this is way, way too generic. You can't be #1 for "magician." But, you can be #1 for "dallas magician," "seattle kids magician," etc. Someone who is a jack of all trades will have a hard time getting to a number one spot maybe because they're not specific enough. Just my thoughts! Best wishes on the SEO! This is a great post, some great ideas! Thank you guys for sharing! Kevin |

What is the best way to check what terms people are using to search for magicians online? For example, how can we check how many people are searching online using "Dallas magician"?
Do people subscribe to sites like "wordtracker" for this? Thanks AM

Well written Jack,
But I think your leaving out that in many markets Google Caffine is active and running (Dallas, Atlanta, Chicago,EXC) with that SEO can be very short term if you ping a new page and every time you update it.. Basic online marketing blueprint people 1. A website built with clients in mind and designed to convert with onpage factors delt with 2. Ping new content 3. Add RSS feeds to agrigators and syndicators (feedburnner) 4. Launch video linking to site (use keyword in title of video) 5. Launch press release linked to site ($80 at prweb) 6. Social Bookmark site, press release, video 7. (my secret) (generate quality backlinks) 8. (yeah don't think so)(ok so a hint, get your local listing) 9. Web 2.0 (Google still loves Squidoo, hubpages) use them 10. Integrate social media RSS into your site, and PING it not only will this system get you indexed FAST (I've seen listings on the front page within 27min of the ping) if you target the same keyword phrase and bookmark the Web2.0 and such you can usually take over 5 or 6 listing on the front page.. There ya go.. a $750 10 week course summarized into a 15 sec read.. hopefully non of my clients will read this LOL

Keyword research-
start with the external keyword tool from google search "external keyword tool" it is normally the #1 link Once you find a good keyword do a little more work.. Just because you find one that looks good with traffic doesn't mean you can realisticly rank for it or that it has ANY commercial intent To get an idea of commercial intent http://adlab.microsoft.com/Online-Commercial-Intention/ to see if you can think about hitting the front page search the phrase and then run the top 10 sites through http://www.siteyogi.com to get an idea of what the competition is doing..
