While these are all incredible options, I annoyingly insist on a small mirror that can be carried in a backpack or purse. Wouldn't that be nice to set at your desk at work?

Hehehe. Smile

I'm in the Quality department so they already look at me funny at work - bringing in a purse and mirror might not help matters.

Go to the dollar store and get 3 locker mirrors and get some duct tape as well and make a trifold... when you are done you can stick it to the side of a filing cabinet...all for under 5 bucks!!

Well, I have a Flip Ultra, don't think it's HD so if you don't' want to be bothered with all that (and believe me it's no big deal), then check this one out:

http://store.theflip.com/products/Ultra.aspx

Lot's of options out there but this is the one I have experience with and spoke of...The one I've used is black and my ultimate point on this is that it's pretty easy to use with great results, nothing complicated about it...I would say that a good classic palm is much more of a challenge than this little thing. I have the webcam MB talked about and the Flip Ultra II.

I agree with MB that the Flip is very user friendly. I read reviews on the HD version, and there were a lot of complaints about choppy playback on a computer. Not so with the standard unit.

Loren, when you started this thread I just KNEW you were looking for a small mirror setup that you could use at work! Tsk, Tsk. I'll keep my eyes out for you!

Thanks for the links MB. My next project will be constructing one of those mirroRS. I used a mirror that cost me 7 bux from walmart and you can also purchase those small 12" mirrors from there too at a cheap price to construct your portable mirror.

I got my Flip Ultra II at Best Buy last week, on sale for $119.99. I just checked their website and the price is back up to $149.99.

Keep an eye out. I bet they go on sale again.

Slickdeals.net is your friend. Deals pop up often.

And with regards to the choppy playback with HD, I have a flip Ultra HD and it works like a charm.

Playback on one's computer would have to do with the computer's hardware, not the camera itself. Smile

Obviously, since we all do close up magic... we all use mirrors. Well, I'd only hope you've used a mirror. It's probably one of the best tools for practice. You might use your bathroom mirror or have one of those that hang on your door... but what about something mobile? It'd be nice to have a closeup mirror to practice my coin magic that's a bit more portable. Yes, I realize these are common, but I haven't seen any that's very potable... unless my google-fu sucks and I totally missed it. Smile

Any ideas? Michal Ammar says to use the unblinking eye of a video camera. This way you get to see exactly what the spectator sees. I have done this and you wouldnt believe how good we realy look to another person watching. It boost your confidence level a great deal also. Cheers PT

Ended up getting myself a Flip MinoHD 120 and just love it.

Such a great value. I didn't really need it... but I'm going to use it to make videos. As far as practicing goes, at home... my webcam is perfect. Smile

Thanks for all of the suggestions!

Remember to get a tripod or decent mount so you can point, frame, start and then get playback something that's useful.

I purchased this mini-tripod at Amazon for my Flip-Ultra and just received it the other day.

It's tiny - about 5" high - but it works perfectly. You can set it up on a table or twist the legs around just about anything to get the angle you want.

... and point it at the worst possible angle.

Another important use of your webcam and tripod is, if you are not performing strolling, filming your audience as you perform. You will gain real audience reactions and be able to time your patter, develop changes of pace, place some high amplitude of attention at the right moment, "place" your voice, increase suspense and wonder in your audience...

If, as I do, you perform strolling, get a friend to film the audience reactions and to forget about filming you. The sound track supplies the mental link you need as you watch the spectators' reactions.

All of this is more important than a high end craftsman new coin set: get the feeling of your audiences and start managing it.

Hi all, I was reading this thread and I wanted to let anyone who has an Iphone 3G know that Apple has finally allowed Apps in the App Store that allow you to record Video from your Iphone. Just Search for camcorder, or Video camera, video etc...
You will be surprised how many apps there are now. hope this helps some of you.

Man, I really wish I knew this before. Quite handy! These camcorder apps actually work incredibly well. Thanks so much for telling me Gerald. I truly appreciate it! Now when I need to make a quick vid, I can... now I need something to hold my iPhone. iPhone tripod? LOL.

What I would find useful is some free Windows software that would mirror from the webcam FULL SCREEN in real time. This would be especially useful when practicing sleights. If, additionally, it allows recording, then so much the better.

Windows Movie Maker and Skype allow preview of the webcam output, but only in a small window. There is a free utility which will do what I want called My Screen Cam, but this appears to have viral adware/malware.

Any other suggestions?
