Simply put - these are "Monte Cristo Decks".
I bought several MC Bike decks from the late, great Neil Lester ("Cards By Martin"). Neil was selling them for $50...and worth every penny! Be careful of the sneaky wording in the "Mastermind" ad: Specator slides out any card (true)..."and immediately it is turned face-up". ---Yes, but its the MAGI that MUST turn the card face-up...while being held in his fingers---the selected card is NOT simply turned over face-up on the table. Still, this deck has been my "secret weapon" for years. At this price, you simply can't go wrong. |

I too bought a Monte Cristo deck from Neil Lester, who made lots of card gaffs for me to my specifications. A wonderful guy, and the best custom card maker ever. Very sad to learn on this thread that he has passed away. When I was last in touch with him he did appear to be ill.

I believe Mastermind is the original name for the non Bicycle deck ie Chris Kenworthy's. When the deck arrived on Bicycle stock the named changed to monte cristo. I bought one from Neil years ago and is golddust to me.
Best effect for me is to find a couple, show deck shuffled, and get one to touch any card as you spread thru the face down deck. Reveal card and Return to deck, shuffle, and ask second partner the position of the card in the deck now 1 - 52? They are always amazed when they are correct. Gotta be in the top 3 of gaff decks ever. |

To quote from my website (and thanks to Neil):
"BTW, did you know that “The Jinx” is supposed to have written an article about that deck in 1940, where it was said that a man called Henry Hardin sold it in 1909 at a price of $3.00. Gosh, that is 100 years ago!" A similar deck was brought up by Mr. Dr. Kersten: The Magic Deck. The deck from Hocus Pocus makes me sceptical.... I have seen cards advertised as Bicycle cards, but the were of an terrible quality - nothing in common with USPCC printed cards, except for the design. Maybe someone who has this from Hocus Pocus can clear this up.

I always thought that someone should make a deck like this that's also a stripper deck. That would be fantastic. Spec could totally freely shuffle. And then with a quick cut I could re orient everything.
Anyone know of a double index'd deck that's also a stripper? |

A spec could never freely shuffle this type of deck, stripper or not. You would be the most nervous magician in the world during the shuffle believe me. The good news is that their is no reason why a spec should shuffle this deck as everything is so clean.

Wrong. I've had specs shuffle
my kennedy mind power deck hundreds of times. Never felt even a bead of sweat never mind nerves. It's all in the balls my friend. I state again, a stripper would be great. Anyone know anywhere I could send a mStermind to get stripped up? |

I never mentioned shuffling a mind power deck. Mind power decks should never be shuffled anyway. No one who owns a monte cristo deck would allow a spec to shuffle it.

I cut my MCD a little narrower and added 1 regular card.
So after any shuffling (by myself!!) I need 1 cut to get the necessary regular card on top (face up). Foolproof ;-) If you dare to let the spec shuffle it; well it's up to you. And if you are master of misderiction, sure they can shuffle it face up.

Anyone with a modicum of performance skill and spectator handling can easily get away with handing out a double indexed card. Easy.
In 11 years, my spectators have never dropped a card. Period. |

Have you ever seen a mastermind / monte cristo deck? I doubt you would let anyone shuffle it except yourself.

If you turn all the cards face down. cut them, place them in a correct way and let them riffle shuffle it on the table by themself.. it works, believe me..
because it is a "regular deck" if you know what I mean |

My father, who performed a trick (described on page 1 of this thread) with a deck similar to the MC or MM deck (no force card, however), also performed a great version of "The Very Last Card," in which cards were chosen by various spectators until only one card remained--that last card turned out to match a prediction (Jumbo Card) held by a Spec since the beginning of the trick. My father only used about half of a regular MC deck (he actually had both a MM deck and a matching regular deck, originally purchased decades ago from Mr. Kenworthey), along with matching regular cards and employed some very neat Equivocation (Magician's Choice). It never failed to make an outstanding impression.
I "inherited" the original MM deck and have actually performed my father's "Last Card" trick as the final phase of a "triple prediction" routine (however, I don't present it as a "prediction"). I've never seen the need to let anyone handle the deck, although I think it could be (with proper management) shuffled by a Spec. DK |

You seem to assume I'm using the mind power deck out of the box as described. Wrong. I'm not a lemming.
There are two incredibe Handlings that involve you shuffling an intentionally incomplete mp deck. But given that you're not a member of the pea and haven't been to armando's las Vegas work shop - you don't know them. So I'll forgive your ignorance. You don't think it's needed or possible - and that is because you don't know enough. Which I love, by the way. |
