Hey guys,
I've recently decided to work on the "bending coin" effect. So I spent $5 on a pair of pliers. To my surprise they bend coins quite easily, but they always leave "cut" markings on the coins. I've tried wrapping the coin in paper towels, t-shirts, etc... but there is always a marking visible. I'm sure some of you have experience with this so was hoping maybe you could share some tips on how to get a nice clean smooth bend... Take Care, Nicholas |

Try wrapping the jaws of the pliers as well as the coin.

I guess what I'm looking for is a soft material that doesn't rip easily. Leather comes to mind but that's a bit too expensive... Suggestions?

These gloves have leather in them that will be very in expensive to use for padding.

Ok well apparently just tape wasn't working after all, so I tried wrapping the pliers with a couple of layers of t-shirt material, then tin foil, then tape. Then wrapping the coin in a t-shirt a couple of times. And even this did not work for me.
I will pick up some work gloves tomorrow and see how that goes. Maybe my pliers are to sharp? I really don't know anything about different types of pliers so will have to look around... Thanks, Nicholas, |

Forget about tape and leather , just put about 1/3 of the coin between two pieces of wood and clamp it in a vice , then bend it by putting another piece of wood against the coin and hit the wood with a hammer .
Or if you want a cleaner easier bend : The pliers that Jeff O mentioned look like they would work if you don't mind spending $40 . |

Used a tube sock, (you know the ones with the stripes at the top that stretch up to your knee? those) put the quarter in there, wrapped it up a few times, then dropped one end in a vice, and then used the pliers to bend it through the sock.

You could fill in the 'ridges' in your pliers with epoxy, Or try filing or grinding them away.

I've used the Leather from some work gloves myself and it works great. I was going to post it but KirkG beat me to it. For the work gloves I just cut off two of the fingers and slipped these fingers over the two jaws of the pliers (as if each jaw of the pliers were a finger) worked great for me you should try it, or you could simply spend almost half a grand and get a Quantum bender as suggested. The choice is yours.
As for me the most magical coin bend I have ever seen is "In the shadow of Geller" By Marc Spelmann which can be found on his Chapters of Marc Spelmann DVD set. Excellent DVDs and Honestly given the choice this is the one I'd do, even if given the choice of all the super expensive coin bending gimmicks out there. Give the gloves a try I'm sure You will like them. Gerald

Thanks for all the suggestions, I don´t wanna spend money on a gimmick to simply do the bend in front of their faces, I realize that the coin can be signed, but it's not worth it when the idea of a coin switch can easily be avoided with good presentation and technique. So i´ll stick to the $5 pliers, since I don´t have a vice available.
Ocha thanks for the suggestion, i´ll make sure to check out those dvd's, they sound great! N. |

Those DVD are great, they are around $95 new but sometimes you can find them in the for sale section for a lot cheaper. I recently sold my set there but I'm sure if you are diligent you'll find them at a bargain. There is so much more on those DVDs than just a coin bend you will get all kinds of ideas for magic in general from those DVDs.
Good luck with all of your magic, Gerald

The coin bending pliers seem great, and for the sake of ease I will probably buy them one day if I decide to continue using the effect. But before I invest the money ($40 is an investment for me hehe) I wanna mess around and see what I can come up with with the stuff lying around. I met up with a magician who bought a tool at blackpool for $5 to bend coins, it's simply to sticks into which you enter the coin and bend them, didn't work very smooth at the start but they should do the job in the end (with a bit of fiddling around.) I guess I'll mess around with the concept for a while and test the effect on my upcoming show. Once I have some experience with the concept I will share what seemed to have worked best for myself.
