If you came to Gibtown years ago you would remember passing the Giant's Camp Restaurant on US 41 and then just in front of the cottages was a concrete slab on which was mounted the Giant Boot.
It was a couple of feet tall and over the years became a sort of Gibtown landmark. The Giant's Camp is gone now, the whole property has been cleared. But, there are plans to erect a monument to Al and Jeanie Tomaini on the site. A tall granite base with a reproduction of the Giant Boot along with an appropriate inscription. The project is nearly complete and requires only a zoning variance from the county before it is ready to be installed. Here is a link to more info: http://concernedcitizensofgibsonton.org/ Please spread the word : "Grant the Variance-Bring Back the Boot!" |

I could say more, but I will hold my tongue or someone might give me a sock. Instead I am going to go out and tie one on, and when asked to foot the bill, I might just ankle the joint. No, that's too arch. I'm not some sneaker. Besides that bartender is on the ball and when I walk in he will probably just tell me to "shoe".
I could move on now and do some calf and shin puns, but that would just be pulling your leg and going out on a limb for a joke. |

Like I said:
Show your support for the Tomaini Monument. Email ( Hearings@Hillsboroughcounty.org ) or write ( PGM – ZONING HEARING SECTION P O Box 1110 Tampa, Florida 33601 ) and do it soon. Without a monument, the sand'll be the only one to remember that Sideshows used to call Gibtown Home. |

One of the cabins has been restored, sealed-up (so no one can get into it) and placed on a cement slab behind the site for the monument. Mosaic (the phosphate company that owns the property) did this, as well as placing fencing around the property, and will place a "Welcome to Gibsonton" sign on the site where the restaurant stood. Two of the cabins were acquired by Ruskin Historical Society and transferred to Camp Bayou, an educational acreage related to the environmental and historical aspects of the area. The two remaining cabins of the five that had remained on the property were used to provide replacement material for the damaged three cabins. The planks used to build the cabins are no longer manufactured in the same manner, so Mosaic took some from the two cabins to replace damaged siding on the cabin which remains on the property, and then offered the Ruskin Historical Society the chance to get some to repair their cabins. Afterward, the skeletons of those being used for replacement materials were destroyed. |
