For the last few years I've been playing with ACAAN (and I can see that I'm not alone here!)
I finally finished my effect and performed it at The Catchpenny Club last month and, as raw as my presentation was, it was a big hit! I've since shared it with Boris Wild who alerted me to the fact that a similar method was used by Trevor Lewis in his effect 'Orbital', now marketed by Aldo Colombini. I contacted Aldo who felt there were good differences in my version and had no problems with me selling it. For the record, I have never seen 'Orbital'. My starting point for developing this effect was 'Knock'em Dead' by Peter Nardi... so, here it is! PERPLEXITY - In a nutshell: * A deck of cards is tossed out to an audience member who shuffles the cards * The magician asks everyone in the audience to think of any number, from 1 to 52 * The magician shows a wallet, which has an envelope inside, which is the prediction, and this is placed on a table where it remains open in full view * The cards are tossed back to the magician who tosses the deck back to the audience, where it is tossed another two times to randomly choose a volunteer * The spectator is asked to look at the envelope and name the number they were thinking of - and they are given the chance to change their mind - then they bring the deck up on stage * The magician opens the envelope and shows the prediction (for example, 3H) * The magician does NOT touch the cards * The spectator counts off the number of cards they chose and there is the the 3H as predicted On sale as a 15 page ebook for $10 here - http://www.australianmagician.com/store/......uctId=26 PS: This is our last eBook for a while! Our typing fingers are exhausted!!!

Can it be done close up Tim? Instead of stage?
You see, I will rarely have the opportunity to really through a deck around, I get the feeling that the wine and glasses might get spilt! Also, can just one chappo do the shuffling? I like to give the deck to someone and have them act as a type of ajudicator. Jon Hackett p.s. tell me to stick my head in the billabong if the answers tip the method!
It is not the brains that matter most, but that which guides them -- the character, the heart, generous qualities and progressive ideas. Doystoyevsky

It sounds like an interesting effect, think I will look into it. I hate the distinction between caan & acaan the audience sees no differance.

It can be done close up.
I've written the ebook as a stage presentation, but when I was workshopping the effect I did it close up and it worked fine. I feel it's so strong it's more a "showpiece" to be used in a formal or informal close up show (for say 20-30 ppl, or more with a video camera) than done table to table for walkaround.

Ok I just got the download last night, I am not going to say that I am adding this to my program immediately as this is not how I do things. What I will say is this is a great effect for stand up work. It is clean, direct & has a lot of opportunity for audience interaction, which is a top priority for me. I agree with Tim I see this as a stage or parlour performance piece not as a walk around effect, I have several other versions that I do for strolling that suit me better, not that you can't with this I just prefer other methods for strolling. Rather you want acaan Or caan this is a great effect as the audience sees no distinction between he two, however the impression of impossibility this effect presents is excellent. Besides the 10 bucks it might cost you another 10-30 bucks for the materials, but chances are pretty good that you already have everything you need ( I know I do). Even the maximum output $40 is a steal for this, 10 bucks makes it a gift. No memorization is required & no sleight of hand is needed. I do not believe anyone would be unhappy with this purchase.

Theres a few extras you'll need for this trick which most magicians should have already.
One off downloads can generally be a bit questionable in terms of the very valid argument regarding the price per effect. Stick a few of these effects together and you could get a decent book of tricks for the price a few downloads cost. The good news is that, even with the most jaundiced eye on price, I think this effect is well worth the money. Theres some proper work gone into the e-book - it doesn't feel even a little bit half done like some e-books do. The mechanics of the effect are clearly laid out and the routine is structured in such a way that the magician is led through the necessary steps to produce a great effect. You can tell by some of the methodology laid out in the manuscript that this is an effect designed by a working pro - theres no vagueness or theory about it - just 100% practicality. Its a really nice parlour or stage routine I can see a pro getting some mileage out of - well worth the investment. |

I've just put a video up of the very first performance of PERPLEXITY.
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=GyZODy1fIdY I did make one mistake, I forgot to show the envelope empty when I took the card out of it. Otherwise, I think you get a good "bare bones" picture of this very powerful and direct effect in action.

In answer to another question - there is absolutely no sleight of hand needed to do PERPLEXITY.

I just purchased it and gave it a read through in one breath--- very well done! This is so easy to perform and yet leaves the audience's mind blown. The ebook is descriptive and direct. I like it! Thank you Tim!

Pleased to hear it Kened. I'll be performing it as a bonus effect in our lecture tour next week, so people can see the impact it has live.

The review by Tom Frame is honest and he does not recommend buying the effect. Hmmm, too bad...I was on the fence on this one.
