I thought I'd hidden from the winter quite well; sitting snug, south of the 'Massif Central'. But sunday evening, the north winds showed the Mistral who was boss,.... the temperatures dropped ten degrees, in four hours. And what was expected as heavey showers, arrived as heavey snow! We got dumped on. 30 centameters. The town's folk loved it,... not wanting to be a party-pooper, we packed up and left,.... headed a little farther south,.. ended up in an even more obscur corner, the Camargue. Really 'going for it', we headed all the way down to Saintes-Maries de la Mer,... the holy pilgrim destination for the Roma,... Gitan, Zigeuner, Gypsies. I call them, "the Wind".
Police, and travel authorities, warn tourists for coming here. Especially during the Sainte Sara festival,... labeled, "the Olympics of Pickpockets". It's off-season, we're here,.... so are many Gypsies! It's funny seeing the Roma SITTING in Cafès versus 'working' them. It's even crazier playing for them!!! Our show is a mix of music and magic, opening with music. So what do you open with, playing for the greatest "wandering musical improvisers" in the world? We played The Washington Post(!) from Sousa.,... hmm, got a little smile, but,.... First illusion, a Miser's Dream type of routine. ahh,... the interest was there, but still no real commitment. Second song, Goody-Goody, sung in French. With Monika, my lady singing, there was commitment,... we had 'em. But what for a second illusion? I tried a Hydrostactic Water (champagne glass) tied together with a Vanishing Bottle. hmm, a smile, but again, loss of interest. Third song, Ain't She Sweet. Again sung by Monika, in French. At the end, she vanishes her glass of Champagne. Bamm,... blew 'em away. The cruncher though, was her going into the cafè to bottle. A lady. With a hat. Up against some of the proudest machos in the world. As she walked thru, no one budged. The first table, smiles, direct eye contact(!),... hands firm on the table. Second table, the same. Third table,... not the slightest movement toward a wallet. These guys were as hard as hammers. Then, one lady(!) stood up, came to Monika and dropped! bammmm,... the skies opened, as did the purses. There is something about a lady's touch that can even calm 'the Wind'. give it easy, gallagher |
