In my opinion (I guess many would agree), Diplopia is one of the best card effects in the world. As a person who focuses on mentalism with cards, this is at the top on my list.
As you know, many people have revised the effect that would fit better to their performance or "ease of use"...specifically the cl****ng method. I myself have used an MD for this as well. My question would be: Are you still performing this effect to people? Is this on top of your list as well in terms of card magic? |

Hi Agaton,
Happy you enjoyed Diplopia. Yes, I still use it; and will let you all know something I use that I've never revealed before publicly. After they name the color you are sending to them, and you agree, I follow with, "Now I'm going to send the number to you..." What I am hoping for is that they will now choose a number card, without being obvious about steering them away from a court card. This will allow you to also drop the Aces, Kings, Queens, Jacks, and Tens, leaving 2-9 to work with. Basically, this little step can save you a nice percentage of the work, moving the arithematic along much faster. Hope this bit helps, it certainly does for me. Shouts, V |

Ah, lest I forget; the running total should now be subtracted from 10.

Is there anywhere a video of the performance can be viewed?

I am going to take this opportunity to share an insight I hope others will choose to follow along with me.
Magic is being destroyed by video performances. Yes, I truly believe this. Before you toss aside my observation please give me a moment to explain. As a part-time close up performer I know that our most valuable tool is being able to mislead our audiences perception on what actually happened, e.g., to shift the chronology of our effect. When the rewind button is a click away we lose this powerful technique. How many times does it take to watch a video of someones work then figure it out? And, even more foolish, those who convince themselves of their own smarts after watching it twenty times in a row. It is my hope that new routines won't be put under this scrutiny and that we will use this power to get paid gigs, performing for real people; instead of giving it away for free. Anyways, just a thought. While I'm sure that not everyone will listen, my inclination is that a few will--those are the ones who will play with the wiring under the board. |

Paul,
I am with you on video performances. I use video, but only to show people my personality and the way that others react/relate to me. If they want to see the real magic, they have to hire the real thing. Oh, and welcome to the Café my friend. Until we appear again, Kipp Sherry |

Bye the way. Do you find me worthy of H.C.E. yet, or is that something you would prefer not to talk about here?

Honored that you've contemplated it. Get ahold of me through alternative channels and we can rap more indepth. You know I'm happy to help you any way I can. Best, V |

Dear Paul,
I admire your work and like Diplopia very much. Your insight on how to narrow down to number cards are very helpful, since I am a very slow card counting person, your comments indeed made me to practice the effect in a better way. I am looking forward to see your new card magic release in coming future, hope this will not take too long. Regards,

Hi Paul,
Let me bring up magic demo performances to the discussion as well. Some say this has helped and others say this has hurt magic. I watch magic demos same as anyone else and I am rarely fooled. Does this mean I would perform the effect without paying my dues? No. I purchase the material because I respect the creative efforts of my colleagues. Sadly, a lot of "magicians" don't think that way and download ripped copies of DVDS or purchase knock-offs to save a buck. You can't stop this type of thief unless you keep your effect under the radar. For example, the young customers of places like Ellusionist have no qualms about pirated MP3s and certainly not magic material! On the other hand, a large dealer like Ellusionist can also help you move lots of copies! A good a demo video can definitely influence magicians to click "add-to-cart". A lot of guys know who you are and so, aren't afraid to take a risk on Diplopia or H.C.E.. If you don't have a name and you don't put out a demo video...you will have a tough time trying to move copies. So, should magician's do away with video demos and stick to ad copy?

Hi Doug,
Case in point: the reason you are rarely fooled is we've gave so much away already--and we gave it away without anyone even asking for it. They didn't even need to do a stick up. As soon as they walked in the door we dropped the goods at their feet. You've also brought up another HUGE choice to make: are we artists or artisans? One brings back things to ponder from an invisible world, the other does family portraits, teaches us how to implement technology into our lives, etc. My goal has never been to move copies. I create because that's what I wish to perform. After many of my performances fellow performers ask me about such and suchs availability. When I've had enough responses I sometimes do a write-up. That's all. In conclusion, I'm not here to tell anyone what to do. I've just given my opinion on what I think can propel us to grander horizons. Once your goal is to sell then the art has fallen into second place (welcome to the now). Which is fine if that's your goal, but it's definitely not mine. Best, V |

I agree in the total art of things. But just another point of view and this case is not myself. But if you think a younger "kid" or person (whose also does not have the money to buy effects) could potentially be downloading tons of material from the greats. With all this knowledge as a younger generation, couldn't they possibly push our magic to a whole new level faster? Not everyone is going to be able to have a great mentor to teach him the ways. I couldn't imagine how much better I would of been if I was able to buy all the things I buy now when I was lets say 10 years old. I could of pushed the art much faster I feel and that's why we see younger generation of kids really pushing the art. Just a thought and curious if anyone felt like its a possibility.

Jpmj: I disagree. Follow me, I think anyone who learns all of Expert Card Technique would probably be better at magic than someone with all the material available they could ever download. It's not a lack of material, it's a lack of vision.
Just to play devil's advocate here (as I know many talented young magi-and I differentiate between them pushing magic and magic pushing them); where are the kids that are pushing the art? What are these new plots they've devised? Flourishes don't count. The way I see it you either have a vision to carry out to the rest of us, or not. Piling on more material can't fix this. |

I agree with your statement one book could make someone better then most magicians. But saying that does not in the end say much. I feel just that in all aspects of "work" if you work one day a week at a 100% you are working harder then 90% of people. So true to your statement but I think there are "kids" pushing the limits and coming up with new effects or at least pushing effects further then have in the past. Such as Ponta the Smith, that is creative visual coin magic. Are they coming up with completely new "effects" maybe not. But then again the effects we come up are spawns of other adaptations that we see. I realized the other day I was struggling to understand how "others" were having magic DVD's coming out with all these "new presentations" but really the methods I already know its just the presentation that is different. Still very viable skill to have I think its just a matter of opinion of what pushes the limits. I think seeing the visualness and the feasiability of effects of video have made me see the benefit of practicing to be better. Meaning I am not going to practice a year to backpalm cards if I couldn't see the impact it has when actually seen done. I would try and be like this is hard and I just don't see the pay off. But now when someone comes out and has card handling skills such as Jean-Pierre Vallarino's I feel people are going to push to reach his skill level. I think styles of magic are pushed when seen. Hope I'm not getting too much off topic.
