I have often wanted to perform a Translocation routine- so I recently purchased an expanded shell to fit some half dollar coins. The problem I have is the shell rests a little to tightly on the coins. It does not dislodge easily. Is this a normal problem with new shells? is there something I can do to make it looser and hence easier to use???
Thank you in advance!

The simplest way is to place a silk over the coin -- then gently press the EXP Shell over it. If it is a 'heads' Shell you can also try pressing down on the center of the empty Shell with a quarter underneath.

Put the file away and get a silk out.

I use a a fine grit emery cloth, wet dry sandpaper. Be gentle and don't over do it. It will allow you to size all the coins perfectly.

The silk is the way to go. Alternatively, exchange it with your supplier.

Where in UK are you based? I may be able to point you in the right direction of people that can supply you with half dollar coins.

Thank you for your responses. I'm in the south of England, But I run a Circus which tours the entire country. So any contacts you may have will be much appreciated. Blighty is a very small country!
As I discovered when I was working in USA!!
Have tried to silk idea with very little benefit so next will gently try reducing the coins!! Will post results!!!

Double and tripple the silk if you must ( before sanding the coin ).

The silk works - you've barely had time to give it a good try! Use the silk - even doubled or tripled and that will work better than any other solution.

Quick update- THE SILK works!! Although must say it was not so much "gently with silk" more jump up and down on rag. However all is well and it now fits my coins really well thanks to all for excellent advise.

Interesting, I never though about using a silk. What do you do when the shell is too loose?

Go outside to the street, throw your empty shell into the air and let it fall edge-wise to the pavement. Repeat as needed:)

I wonder if you could wrap the silk on the outside of the shell and place it over a coin and kinda twist the silk to get a to large shell to fit better. or you could just find another coin.

or the gnomes could fix it

Hey Billie,

Did you buy an expensive shell? If you did, go buy some half dollars that will fit your shell instead of messing with the shell and possibly ruining it.

If the shell was cheap, go ahead and use the silk method carefully. If you expand the shell too much, place a coin inside and rub the edge on a hard surface.

Billie, I thought the same thing when I first read about using a silk to expand a sh**l - "this will never work."

It did work, though. Amazingly well. Smile
