Hi Paul,
I don't know a whole lot about the effect. Only what I've read on your blog and some posts here on The Café. How did you come up with the premise for the routine? From what I've read and heard from others, it really sounds like an amazing routine! Also, when deciding on how much to sell it for, did you bounce around with a few numbers? Or, did you just decide it was going sell for what it's currently selling for? Thanks! Jason

Also we would be interested to know how many copies of HCE you sold, and how many you gave away to close friends.
Thank you, BM |

Jason: Thanks for showing up. The premise for the routine come from experimenting with a handful of different principles that finally coalesced into a unified whole. The reason I decided to sell it for this amount was my good friend, Jerome Finley a.k.a. TT2, seen me perform it and walked up to me after a show with $1000 and said, "Here, I want the secret to that now. I will give you $9000 more as soon as I have it!" After he bought it for this amount I only thought it fair for others.
BM: I've sold about a baker's dozen, and haven't given away any copies. Most of my closest friends have never read it, and those that have I've limited to two read thrus. Everyone who owns it knows whom the rest are, as we have a private google group with which we discuss the ins and outs of the routine. |

It was worth every penny (including the additional 9K I promised, ha!) and remains one of the strongest pieces I've ever performed, plain and simple.
To this day "HCE" is the only thing I do with a pack of cards. I've made some very slight revisions and combine it with a Q&A sequence. Not only does this allow me to read minds with stunning specificity, but it allows me to combine traditional fortune telling with playing cards when developing my readings on stage. The combination seems so unfair...then again, I'm an advantage player and Paul's masterpiece has definitely given me the advantage. Armed with nothing more than a pack of cards I know I can thoroughly entertain and captivate an audience of practically any size. "HCE" allows me to read the minds of 16-24 audience members in breathtaking fashion, answer thought of questions with greater impact and empowers me with an INVISIBLE CRIB during the process. The audience doesn't realize I'm getting the majority of my reading lines directly from their thought-of card; for everyone involved or watching, it's simply a miracle. In the 15 years I've been performing for serious pay I've invested in A LOT of great information, nifty gear, crafty effects, workshops, consultations, private classes (etc). Without a doubt "HCE" remains one of my greatest investments ever and something that has paid for itself many times over. If you guys can't tell, I FREAKIN LOVE THIS PIECE and would recommend it to the discerning professional without the slightest reservation. It's great to see you here, V! Let's all pick this guy's brains dry while we have the chance. For real. -Jerome Finley

Paul,
I'm so glad you treat this effect with reverence. Dissuading the curious, emphasizing the value of the magic and keeping secret that most special . . . it's magic. I've read most of what you've written on magic. I'd send you the thousand dollars to read HCE. I know I'm not that caliber of a magician. Should I ever become one. I'll send you the dough. It is not about the money. It's respect for the magic. I look forward to many things, mostly these days, I look forward to the end of July. Kent Gunn |

I can tell you this. HCE will space your face a little bit. I remember the first time I preformed this. Tryin' to describe the experience is like tryin' to describe the sun to a blind man... just really doesn't work out. For all you wanting more information about this effect... All we can do is point the door out to you, only you can walk through it. No one can have the experience for you. Welcome to the Café, Paul.

I've had the luxury of seeing Paul perform HCE live. I left the room after the show and pointed out to a friend that THAT was the way that magic was supposed to look.

Hi Jeff,
Long time no see. I remember feeling good after that show, too. I've heard this from others and it brings me back to one of the biggest points I hope to convey to anyone listening while I'm here--magic doesn't need to be, nor do I feel that it is, best suited to being represented only in the visual realm. Now anyone whose seen me perform knows I start with sleight of hand, but slowly move away from this toward magic that takes place in participants mind, and where the spectators tell their friends afterwards, "But, he didn't touch anything." For this model that I'm working with there is no room for flourishes, or such displays of fancy juggling skill. Those types of effects will ruin the "picture" I work so hard at creating. I know this is where the focus has been for the last handful of years and I want everyone whose inclination is contrary to this to know they are not alone. Enough about me, thanks for stopping by. Good to know you're still out there. Any trips to the Big LV planned this year? Keep me in your loop, buddy. Best, V |

As soon as I get a real job, I'll be planning a trip out. Jay's got NX scheduled in June, and I'll definitely be out for that, too. I'll give you a call when I get it scheduled.
