I went to a lecture from sheldon rhoads and he talked about the 7 effects a magician can do.
I read clown magic and david ginn mentions at least 12 effects. then while I was watching Michal Ammars complete cups and balls he mentions the 18 effects of magic without listing them can someone list these 18 effects I am sure most will be self explanatory |

2. Vanish (Disappearance, obliteration) 3. Transposition (Change in location) 4. Transformation (Change in appearance. character or identity) 5. Penetration (One solid through another) 6. Restoration (Making the destroyed whole) 7. Animation (Movement imparted to the inanimate) 8. Anti-Gravity (Levitation and change in weight) 9. Attraction (Mysterious adhesion) 10. Sympathetic Reaction (Sympathetic response) 11. Invulnerability (Injury proof) 12. Physical Anomaly (Contradictions, abnormalities, freaks) 13. Spectator Failure (Magicians' challenge) 14. Control (Mind over the inanimate) 15. Identification (Specific discovery) 16. Thought Reading (Mental perception, mind reading) 17. Thought Transmission (Thought projection and transference) 18. Prediction (Foretelling the future) 19. Extra-Sensory Perception (Unusual perception, other than mind) (I found this on the Genii forums, I take no credit for this) Hope I could help! -John |

Not sure a definitive “list” of effects is even possible, since many overlap on multiple levels. For example, a so-called “transposition” is usually just a simultaneous production and vanish. Restoration and transformation often use the same methods. And anti-gravity could easily be thought of as animation (or even PK) along a different axis.
Read and study all you can find, and make your own list as it applies to the way you perform. My wife long ago gave up trying to get me to stop buying identical TWO’s of everything, but when you have a duplicate, EVERYTHING becomes a magic trick!
...what if I could read your mind?

What would coins across be? Teleportation? or 1, 5 and 7?

A coin across routine, to me , would fall under number 3 in John_Herm's list above. #7 would be more along the lines of haunted deck etc. A good example of #5 would be the classic linking rings.

The list isn't very good as some things are missing and others are essentially the same thing. For example I don't think 'control' should be there, as the actual effect would be animation. A coins across is not a transposition but a transportation (which is missing from the list)- a transposition is two objects swapping places. And number 12 ? A physical anomaly or ''freak'' as it says in brackets, is ceartinly not a magic effect. jim

I think there is a very short list on this subject either in Magic And Showmanship or in Strong Magic. The question is how fine-grained you want to categorize the effects. Is "color change" a category in its own, or is it to be subsumed under "transformation"?
Essentially you have only very few categories of effects: You can produce, vanish or change an object, read or influence a person's thoughts, predict some event - maybe we can find even broader categories. |

This list business isn't a very good idea in my opinion. If you focus too much on cutting the effect down, you can bring the list to 1 effect- something happens that shouldn't be possible. Just don't focus too much on this list, for it can greatly hinder your creativity!
